Am I over thinking this? (pin distances)

I\'ve always shot a 3 pin, but with my new set up I went to a 5 pin.
So I am sitting here trying to figure out what I want to do for a pin setup and I\'ve come up with three separate setups.....

My first two are based off the fact that I read about and have heard of too many people messing up on up close shots (20 or less)
So to combat that, I am thinking of doing a short distance pin, that way I am not just dropping my 20 pin low.

So with that being said I am looking at:

10, 25, 35, 45, 55
10, 20, 30, 40, 50
Of the two I prefer the first one because it should have a little more distance between the 10 and 25 verse the 10 and 20.
Or, if I am just over thinking this, I\'ll probably do 20, 30, 40, 50, 60.

Im going to mess with all of these setups of course, but I was just wondering if anyone had any input.

The way I hunt and plan to hunt, I\'ll be having closer shots and don\'t really care about the bottom pin.
Worst case, I will remove one pin if it\'s too crowded.

Thoughts?

I have the 20-60 set on my bows and it works very good for me.

For the closer shots I would do some shooting inside 20 to see where it hits for your setup using your 20 yard pin.

All the shooting I have done this winter has been in my basement at 9 yards for field tips and 8 yards for broadheads. All shot using my 20 yard pin held dead on. You have seen the pics so it does work fine for me.

Some people say what I do won\'t work. They say I would have to use my 40 or something.

I say start shooting with your 20 and work your way in and see how it works for you.

I also use the 10-20-30-40-50-60 pin distances. Have for long time.
EDIT - I use 20-60 pins no 10

Splitting pins for odd yardages takes some practice.
Its can be hard to keep pins from floating [top & bottom] when the POI is in No Mans Land

Thats why the slider pin sights are so popular

I\'m like Francis and have mine set for 20-60. 10 yards should be really close to your 20 pin IMO and could almost be lower than your 20 yard pin. I\'d try setting your sight so your top pin is at 20 and then shoot inside that distance. For me, I needed my 40 yard pin at 5 yards and I am in between my 20 and 30 at 10 yards IIRC.

i have 25 35 45 55 65. then i just use the the first number to determine pin, ex any 40-49 is 45 yd pin, etc.

I run a 1 pin slider. Set at 25 yards I am good from point blank to 40 (with holdover). My bow is on the faster side RPM360 @ 74lbs which helps.

I used a 5 pin for a long time and like you mentioned, screwed the pooch on a gimme shot at 14 yards. Too many pins all on brown hair and I flock shot him! I think a 10 yard pin would be completely unnecessary and actually make things tougher due to pin clutter.

I also like to shoot past 50 yards. It\'s good for practice and you never know when that wounded deer will be broadside at 70 yards!

Go with the 20-60 like mentioned. That is what I have used for years. With the speed of todays bows you don\'t need a 10yd pin, your 20yd pin will do just fine. The best thing once you get sighted in is to go shoot some 3d tournaments that have unknown distance to the shooter. You can really get the feel on how to use your pin gap. There in Clovis they usually have one every month and its only like 10.00 to shoot. It will also help with judging distance in the field. That is what has worked for me.

I like this setup for elk for sure. My only issue with setting up my bow like this is that you would be shooting fairly high at about 15 yards which seems to be a distance that is pretty common for a tree stand shot. I can run the trajectory on my PC this evening with my setup just to see how this would would work for me.

I think the trick pin setup is sweet for elk but I don\'t know if I could make myself switch to something that different.

Tons of good recommendations and info in here.
I\'ll start hitting the range and figure out what option will work the best. :upthumb:

Thanks everyone

You better start cause I\'ve seen you shoot. :mg:

The 25-65 distance sounds like a good setup. The thought has never crossed my mind to do that. It gives you an added 5+ yards maybe more depending on how well you know your holdover.

Edit: I was referring to setting up a bow like this as a whitetail treestand hunter who normally takes close shots and then taking that bow out west to hunt elk.

your gonna have to go with what you think is best I do the 25-65 because as fast as today\'s bows are going 0-30 which the majority of my shots are is always top pin. It has worked for me inside 30 you might be off an inch high but it hasn\'t seemed to matter the elk don\'t know any different

i\'m a nerd. my first pin is PI. 3.14..

and the rest are some decimal distance..like my second pin is 22.38 yards.

just kidding.

20, 30...i like it simple.\\

closer than 20..use the 20..unless it\'s REALLY close..then, i use my 40 (and go put it high)

Interesting idea Scott. As a newcomer I might be crazy, but with my pins being at 20, 30, 40, etc I was planning on aiming in between the pins if I caught an in-between yardage, like 25 or 35 yards. Does anyone else do this or do you guys just use a pin that\'s close?

I split the difference if it\'s in the middle. A couple yards I use the closest pin.

I\'ve always used 20-30-40 and just split between the pins like you, Francis.
Couple yards was also closest pin.
