Another Pass or Shoot?

lol....ok....assuming he isn\'t to small a bull for some of you guys that only kill whoppers. He is 3 yards, no clue you are anywhere near him and you are at full draw. Shoot? :help2:

I don\'t know.....is the angle just right? Is he too far quartered? What is the margin for error at this range? Are you sure it\'s 3 yards, did you range it to be sure? What is the wind doing? Do you think he will jump the string? What if I\'m too nervous? Can you get both lungs and the heart? Or just one? Fixed blade or mechanical broad head? I probably will wait till he backs up one more step! :haha:

If anyone remembers that video I posted last season where the guy shot his bull at 5 yards (using Jeffs slip blind I might add) it seemed like a more difficult shot than someone would think.

When I am usually shooting my bow, it leaves my rest, does what looks like a little tail whip and then flies straight.
So I am wondering if it would have time to correct and fly straight with it being that close.


I am pleased with the quartering away shot/broadside shot......

....so yeah. I am taking this shot. I am aiming for a lower double lung shot, so if it travels up a few inches for some reason, it\'s still a double lung.


I could just wait a little too for a better shot.



I am very interested in peoples responses.

Each fall I buy an OTC elk license.
It doesn\'t say big bull or small bull, big cow or small cow.
I hunt. I don\'t have to impress anyone on what I shoot, I\'m much too old for that.
I like the taste of elk meat. I like to use my pack frame to pack elk meat out.

My arrow will enter this bulls side 1/3 up. The broadhead will probably hit the opposite shoulder/leg and bounce back a few inches.
The elk will bolt. I will see about 6 inches of my arrow sticking out as he runs off.
I make a few cow calls.
He slows down, I watch him and mark the last place I see him disappear.
I do not move. I won\'t even take a step.

I look at my watch. I make note of why time it is. I take out my GPS and push MARK/ENTER.
Only then will I take a step, maybe sit down, recap on what just happened.

I wait a minimum of 30 min before I head to the spot I last saw him.
I walk the same route he went, checking for sign.

I find, blood. Lots.
I mark it with TP and continue on.

I soon find him, piled up.

I get out my OTC E/S license and punch my tag.

Then it\'s time for pics, to soon post on BTO.

that video of the Quebec bowhunter/guide shooting the moose at point blank range. yeowza!! he had the arrow INCHES from the moose walking by. he was shaking like a leaf, and he is arguably the best guide in the region.

Make sure he is a 4pt legal bull in most units Brad.......... Heck yes I am shooting and I will find him after a nice 30 to 60 minute sit to enjoy the moment.

All you guys actually make very good points. I was teasing with the pic (and expecting a Jeremy response lol) but in all seriousnessessess you guys bring up good things. I will confess something....as embarrassing as it is. I clean missed a point blanker one year! I guess we can all learn from mistakes and if anybody can learn from my blunder it was not an entire loss.
It was the late 90s and Swede and I found a nice water hole to put a tree stand on. I wasn\'t with him when he put up the stand before the opener and he informed me that it was good to go the night before we were to start hunting. I asked him where he put up the stand and he told me basically it was on the well defined elk trail that went parallel to the water hole about 15 yards off the water. I said...\"Uh....you put it right ON the trail???\" He said, \"Ya...the elk will come down the draw following the trail and peel off to the water hole giving you an easy 15 yard shot when they put their head down to drink.\" Of course! lol I said....\"What if they don\'t stop to drink? Then all you will have is a point blank shot or a shot where you try to land one on their back as they continue down the trail walking staight away from you!\" Swede assured me they wouldn\'t do something that silly. They would get a dang drink of water! Thirsty! Right! So I am sitting there opening evening when I hear hooves. I look up the draw and about 100 yards up a cow elk is coming down at a decent clip. She comes down that trail like she is on a sting. Does she stop at my tree and peel off to the water? Heck no. She keeps going down the trail. NOT thirsty! I was not terribly annoyed as I prefer to wait for a bull anyway. But you will never guess what is behind her! Ya...you know. Here he comes. The entire time I am saying, \"This sucker is NOT stopping either.\" When he is about 50 yards up the trail and closing I draw.....he keeps walking down and passes the turn off the the water...just like Swede said he would NOT do. Stupid not thirstly elk! So I have a slit second to decide what to do. I turn my bow straight down as he is about one and a half foot from the base of my tree and I figure he is dead meat with me center punching his spine. My bow goes off....and an explosion occurs. Crap is flying EVERYWHERE...fletching, nock, carbon fiber....broadhead pieces. It was all rock around him. I missed him clean! What I didn\'t know, and never practiced was a point blank shot. When I was using my 20 yard first pin I should have been using like my 40! Makes no sense right? Granted I should still not have missed him clean but I am glad I didn\'t wound him. I learned. That bull was as shocked as I was. Too bad I made a second terrible error. He ran (he was a nice 5x5) about 10 yards and stopped and looked up at me. He looked as if he was saying \"what on God\'s green earth happened?!!!\" I knew he was spooked but I was dumb enough to think maybe I could grab another arrow. I should have waited and hoped he just turned to walk off. He saw my movement and it was over. Anyhow...point blanks....not always such a gimme as much as they might seem. :mrgreen:

I\'ve see someone miss a 10 yard shot on a cow. That\'s why I practice at short distances.

Ya, I remember that night when you got to the truck. I remember shooting a near point blank range elk at Ladder Hole. The arrow went down a rib and never penetrated into the boiler room. That taught me to shoot higher and consider the path of the arrow through the animal.
BTW, I would love to see the scenario above this coming season. Maybe it will happen when I am with J. F.

hahah this is such a great story. Definitely not something I should have been reading this early because I started cracking up when you were saying
stuff like \"Uh....you put it right ON the trail???\" or the best was \"Stupid not thirstly elk!\".

It\'s funny how things like that happen.
This last season I put a guy who is brand new to hunting in one of my spots. I told him EXACTLY what would happen.
\"A deer is going to come down here from the left, cross in front of you at 7 yards, and give you a perfect broadside shot.\"

I had told him a big 8 pointer lived in there, so watch out, he is a good deer.

Well, I get a text \"YOU KNOW THAT BIG 8 POINTER? HE DID EXACTLY LIKE YOU SAID........ HE CAME DOWN AT 7 YARDS AND STOPPED RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME.\"


Me: \"WOOOOHOOOOOO AWESOME!!!!! I WILL COME HELP YOU DRAG.\"

Friend: \"Well......he did exactly what you said, I saw him and went into complete shock that he did exactly what you said. So I ended up just in a stare off competition with him and then I just waved at him because I didn\'t know what to do.\"

You know, now that I think about it, I think the same thing happened when I put Colorado Russ in a different spot.
I think he may have been inspecting the back of his eyelids though just to wake up and see the deer standing in front of him. :haha:

Learned the same lesson Luke....but at a 3d shoot. Had to use a mulligan on the turkey target that was just 2-3 feet away. Dad told me, it\'s not the pin you think it should be, I was like duh, because it\'s not a pin at all, I don\'t have a ten yard pin or lower....yeah I missed and dad nailed it. I said what pin then hotshot....he says 30 yard pin, I be like WHAT!!! Weird but it\'s true. Good thread Luke.

I know! That is so weird! Too bad I had to learn on a nice bull. lol! Oh well. I have lots of screw up stories. :crazy: Glad I could provide a good laugh!
