Heading out this weekend to help my old man try to punch a doe tag. This is our typical hunt that we do in the years we don\'t draw our buck tags, like I was fortunate to do this year. Looking forward to being the guide for a change! It\'ll just be nice to get out as well. I still have the big game itch right now and the waterfowl hunting isn\'t helping it much!

No different strategy-wise. The antelope seem to be in different spots this time of year though. I guess you could call it more of their winter range. But the strategy is still to find them and then find a way to get close enough.

What kind of shot range are you looking at?

My dad is capable of 500 or so, but we\'ll try to keep it under that if possible. They get spooked pretty easily this time of year though, so it\'s much easier said than done.

Just grabbing breakfast now and about to head out!

Well, put a long stalk on a herd of over 20 this morning. Got to 450 yards and were trying to get setup, but they caught a glimpse and took off. 3.5 miles for nothing, but that\'s how it goes. Back at them this afternoon.

No luck today. Man, they are so skittish this time of year! You can\'t get inside 1,000 yards of them in a vehicle without them taking off into the next county. Had a decent opportunity this evening, but no luck. We\'ll be back after them in the morning.

Well, we went back after them yesterday and didn\'t have any luck. We saw them all over the place, but never on huntable land. We did have one group see our truck from over two miles away and take off running. Unreal how good their eyes are and how skittish they can be. We couldn\'t even see them without binoculars and they were running from us.

Might try to get back after them next weekend, but we\'ll see. This hunt was a good reminder that you have to act quick and take the shot when you have the chance, because that chance might not last long and it might end up being your only real good chance.

Good luck if you head back out, Derek :upthumb:

Thanks for posting, Derek. I was out last weekend to help a buddy fill a doe tag in WY. He killed one out of a group of about 500  . They sure do stack up this time of year. What I have noticed is that landowners will about pay you to kill them off their farms this time of year. You may want to try knocking on a few doors as I\'ve had 100% success getting access this time of year and it usually leads to permanent access. Good luck!
