I was wondering what everyone's general thoughts on the AR-15 and guns that are like it. If you are pro or against them what are you reasonings?

I have mixed feelings on this debate. Don't get me wrong I love guns and am all for them. On one hand I understand that it is our right to have them(AR-15) and they are super fun to shoot. I can imagine for coyote hunting they would be great especially if you had more than one coyote coming in. They are lightweight usually. Great for collections and how custom you can make them.

But at the same time, is something that can hold 30 bullets necessary? And you won't be able to keep them out of wacko's hands. There are plenty of other semi-automatic rifles out there that hold 3-10 bullets that you can buy.

I don't think there is anyway to get them off the street which I'm fine cause I sure enjoy shooting them. What are some of your thoughts?

I think that in the US 3.5% of violent crimes are committed with a rifle, of that 3.5% less than .5% are committed with an "assault" rifle. According to the FBI the number one used weapon in a violent crime is a baseball bat.
Furthermore, more than two times as many people die every year from an unintentional fall than with any firearm.

If we want real "reform", and we want to make our "streets" safer we need to stop people from killing each other with baseball bats, and instill a sense of balance in people so they stop tripping.

"Assault" rifles are a nice hot button issue that works everyone up, but does nothing to address the real issues that we have.

I personally love AR style rifles for a few reasons:
1) they are very accurate to 300 yards and that is with open sights - just imagine a scope attached.
2) little to no recoil. Talk to any military person and they will tell you the same.
3) easy to brake down, clean and reassemble- remember these were designed for soldiers in tough areas so why wouldn't you use something that is tough?
4) and last but not least- yes they do have 30 round magazines, they also come in 10 round and 100 round drum; As does my glock so I don't see why its an issue. Some will say you don't need that many rounds, fine don't load it full - are you going to get done and say dang I could have shot that Bull if only I didn't have so many rounds? Does an archer only carry one or two arrows?

2nd Amendment:  shall not be infringed.  The US Government already implemented an assault weapons ban in 1934.  Which defines assault weapons as automatic machine guns.  Just because the AR15 looks like an GI issue M-4 it's not,  it is a semi automatic rifle Period.  Gun control is not about guns,  it's about control.  Tragedies should not be used for political agendas.  One more question?  What if hypothetically the Chinese invaded America?  Good thing we would have our pistols and rifles with 10 or less round magazines huh?  This is why they won't invade America.

Whether on a bench or in the field they are a lot of fun to shoot.  I've got a 12x scope on mine and can shoot out past 600 yards accurately.  I long for the day I get to unload my 30 round clip at coyotes running across a field!

Hate to admit this but I use to be one of those that did not think they belonged in the field hunting. That was a personal thing and nothing against someone owning them or hunting with them.

Since then, I have changed my mind. I still would not take one on a hunt for big game but when it comes to coyotes, wolves, rabbits, etc... I am in. I have purchased a Remington R-15 in .223 caliber with the Nikon Coyote Special scope. It is a ton of fun to shoot.

When it comes to the 2nd, I agree it is not to be infringed upon.

If you give in on any measure of gun control, even to just "keep the peace", you have given them the firepower to take the next step.  It's the old saying, give an inch they'll take a mile.  Inch by inch your second admendment rights will be taken away.
I personally hunt yotes with an AR15.  It's light weight with little to no recoil.  Used to be cheap to shoot until the crazyness....  and its not even about the 30 round clip for me I only use a 20.  I personally don't like the extended mag.... but that should be my decision not someone elses.

I have mixed feelings also, I think the violence is a moral issue that has to be dealt with, and gun control is the medicine the government wants the healthy to take.
I dont think the 2ND amendment was put there to only protect our right to have sporting arms, but to have our country protect itself from hostile invasion.
However, Americans have a different moral stance today than 200, 100 or even 50 years ago.
