Are You Working Out?

I have to admit that I haven\'t been doing much at all in terms of working out. I used to workout for a good couple of months prior to the season, but last year I was just too busy and never really got the time to do it. However, I didn\'t really notice any difference when we got out there last year and I was still able to cover all of the ground I typically would have. I am a fairly active guy, but of course I could lose a few lbs and work the cardio a bit. Tough to get motivated to do it when I got by without it last year :shifty:

I have a year round (daily) routine (200 pushups, 200 bicycle crunches, 200 triceps lifts, 30 minutes treadmill walk/run on 10% grade)

I have found the older I get, the harder it is to get into elk shape

I ramp it up by adding a 30# pack to the treadmill workout around July. Weekends are a lot of rucking around in the mountains.

Yes, six miles up and down hill after work today with a 35 pound ruck sack. It\'s either that or an hour on the treadmill at 15% grade for an hour at least 3-4 times a week. I\'ve been doing that since my 2nd knee replacment (Jan 14). I\'m going on my first real elk hunt this fall and want to make sure I leave everything I have on the mountain so if I come back empty handed I know I can\'t say I didn\'t give an honest effort.

Too true! And I agree, working out year-round routine is key. It\'s easier to stay in shape than to get into shape, and it only gets worse as you age. When I\'m not sidelined by injury or surgery, I run, lift, crunch, mtn. bike, & shoot a bow all year round, & then add walks w/a weighted pack if I draw.

The elk are out there staying hard and pure; maybe if I do the same I\'ll be ready for them!

i am in the best hunting shape of my life. can i be better? oh heck yes!! but i am way better now.

i just ran with the El Paso SWAT team and didnt finish dead last. i was mid pack and itching for more. super fun.

i am scouting the mountains this weekend for deer. my buddy has a hurt knee so we wont go to hard. i might leave him to gain some elevation.. i can do a fifty lb pack fairly easy now. hike 5 or so miles and not really strain.

Sounds like you are ready to go. Tic, Toc, Tic, Toc, 85 days and season opens. It will be here before we know it. I better get my gear organized. I like to be ready with all but food 30 days before I leave.

ran another 5k yesterday with my 10 year old. I managed to beat him by almost 3 minutes this time. Probably one of the last times that\'ll happen.

he whipped me fair and square last time we ran a 5k together. The little fart started a little in front of me, and just kept pulling away the whole race.

5.9 miles with my spike camp on (about 40#), 2 hours 28 minutes, with an 1,100 foot elevation change. Max elevation 7,150 feet.

Also got to try my recently re-treated rain gear the last mile and a half. Major ran storm.

Not to bad. I still have a month before the first real trip up to the mountains. :train: :train: :train:

X5 Incline trainer daily, this morning did a 1000 ft climb as fast as I could just to try something different, 20-30 deg incline took me 22 min, was disapointed with that. Least Ive lost 40 lbs since I started.

I have a bicycle exercise routine that I generally go through 6 times per week. It works my arms and legs and gets my heart rate up for 30 minutes.

Lifted this morning, shot my bow yesterday after the treadmill. More treadmill today, I would go for hike with my pack but I want to be home in time to see part 2 of The Trembling Giant.
