I have killed 4 bears. 3 in Sask and 1 in NC. I have eaten the backstraps as well. While it isnt terrible, i didnt think it was too great either. Currently I have 2 rugs with the head left on, one full body on a Cinnamon boar and one 1/2 body on a black with a white blaze on the chest. I dont plan to bear hunt in the near future after 4 years in a row of going to Canada.

it\'s virtually guaranteed. i cook it until super done. if i had to call the best game meat, it would be this one bear we killed in the sierras. it was embarrassingly young. but tasty.

we cooked it good and overdone and it was delicious.

I\'ve killed one with the stickbow and had a rug done, thought it turned out really nice but as Stoneman said make sure you have the wall space for it. I didn\'t have many options in my house, between windows, furniture, etc.

Mine was a super old sow, she was actually missing about half her teeth and we all thought the meat was still tasty...

I shot a deer like that. Took it to the butcher and made sure not to make eye contact with anybody!

I\'ve killed 2 bears and eaten many more. I remember one that tasted not great. We\'re pretty sure it was eating at a nearby dump and was the nuisance bear getting into people\'s trash, but it was still better than Barbary meat. Also, bear meat is the only North American wild game meat I will absolutely not eat cooked less than medium. Make sure it\'s cooked to at least 165. There is no need to get worms or trichinosis from bear.

As far as what to do with one after you shoot it... I think it mostly depends on the bear you shoot. The only reason I didn\'t pass on the 2nd bear I shot was because it had a white blaze on its chest and a really nice coat. I actually watched it for about 40 minutes before I saw it had white on its chest, then it took me about 15 seconds to put an arrow in him.

It was expensive, but worth it. Make sure your taxidermist is good at doing bear. I\'ve seen more bad mounts than good... I have one of each, and learned my lesson the hard way.

I honestly don\'t know what I would do with a giant bear. Rugs are nice, but huge bears make enormous rugs. I feel like a shoulder mount wouldn\'t do the animal justice. So, I guess that leaves full body mount, but where do you put a 4-500lb bear in your house?

I\'m basically saying, stick to shooting 250lb-ish bears and your choices are easier.
