Best Time to Scout in Co

I was thinking of making a trip out to CO to do some scouting before the archery opener, and was curious as to when most of the backcountry roads will be free of snow. I will most likely be in the colorado springs area, and imagine that there is still a chance for some snow cover in the upper elevations into late May/early June. Would it be better to wait till July? Any thoughts?

I would wait till late July early August. Ideally as close to season as possible would be best in my opinion. You don\'t need to know where the elk are a month or two before season. You need to know where they are during season.

I think the other issue is that too early and the elk will likely be in a different area than they will in September.

Totally agree...trying to sneak a scouting trip in under the disguise of a vacation with the wife :lolno:

Charlie, if you head to the area we\'d discussed, PM me again and I\'ll offer up some vacation ideas.

A scouting trip to learn the area in July is better than no trip at all - understand how 2 trips from MO within a month might be stretching it is all.

If your wife likes the outdoors, you can do a scouting/hike day trip just to familiarize yourself. Might not be where you end up hunting but will be in the general area.

Let me know when you\'re planning on going. My wife and I love to travel and hike.
I could meet you there and help you scout.

I don\'t know exactly how much help that really is, but hey... who knows! :upthumb:

When I was hunting Colorado my wife and I usually went in July (most of the time later and closer to August) for a vacation/scouting trip.... My wife also went with me during hunting season but stayed at camp since she does hunt except the year I was recovering from my heart attack... She only went one day and told me to keep my radio handy... :D :D

I agree the later you can go the better it is for you to learn where the elk should be during your hunt...

I agree Bowfreak!! Everyone here is awesome!! Russ and Dan...I will be in touch as my plans are finalized...probably planning on mid to late July.

Heck, me and Sandy could meet you down there too. She loves to hike, hunt and fish. Plus, we haven\'t been down to that area in a few years.

Late July- early August would be best. But regardless of when you come to scout, look for where the cows are, not the bulls. And remember, where the cows are in August is where the bulls will be in September.

You should take Russ up on his offer to help you out. But beware of his chille ! :ill: :haha:
