Bone in or bone out?

It all depends on how far I have to pack and how many I have to help. If there is enough of us to pack out in one trip will not usually bone out. If I have to make a bunch of trips I will most likely bone out

I normally do bone in for elk, but I'll sometimes do bone out for deer. The reason is, no matter what I'm making multiple trips to get the elk out, but I can get a whole deer in one trip if it's not a giant. I have been known to carry whole deer out in my pack though...

I'll pack bone in this year (except for moose) and actually weigh the bones to see if it makes a worthwhile difference.

Due to extreme mountain conditions and long hikes in and out, the extra weight is not worth it. Bone out.

We are always running 4-6 head of stock in our elk camp so bone in is the way to go for us.  Full Quarters always ride better than the loose neck/rib meat etc. thrown on top of a pack saddle.

Carrying those loads out on your own back might change that view though...although loose meat always shifts more than bone-in.

I'm split with everyone here. It depends on weather, location of kill site in reference to my vehicle, as well as if I have to pack a camp out.  I would prefer bones out if you have the time and ability for sure.  Saves my back tremendously!

I agree with Kdkehoe, there are a lot of variables. If its hot and/or you are far away from a method of cooling, yank the bones. Otherwise, it doesn't matter much. Weight can become the issue, but that's why we train  ;) haha

Bone in if less than a mile from the road, but anything farther than that I think I would bone it out. Also depends on how much time you have. I f you haven't done it before it could take you quite a while. Whatever you do, be careful with that knife. I've heard it said many times that dressing the animal out can be the most dangerous part of the hunt.
