And we walked some more...

The heavy timber was refreshing and the temp was very nice

We walked and walked....

The heavy timber finally opened up into some absolutely beautiful meadows...

Camp!
This is home for the next 9 days...

And the sun did not shine the whole time...

Pro tip to single men:
if you find a woman who will help you pack into the mountains, then bring the horses back off the hills for you while you elk hunt with your buddies: MARRY HER!

Bonus points if she shoots a 29\" draw, 60# Matthews she wont mind you borrowing a couple weeks a year....

After the tent was set up and gear organized, I cut some wood for the stove in the tent

Great start Brad! Looks like you might\'ve been a little out of breath on that video hiking in!! I would\'ve had to have a couple of beverages after that trek! :upthumb:

I went for a short hike Saturday evening while John and Eric went a different direction from camp.

About 5pm, I hear a bugle!

I close the distance and he bugles again!

He was above me and moving west. I saw him move in the timber and he was a NICE BULL!
I flanked him as fast as I could but couldnt keep up as he dove off into the deep stuff.

I peeled off hoping to come back in the morning.

As I moved back toward camp, I eased into a large meadow and was pretty bummed out from what I saw...

12 head of horses and mules with a wall tent all spread out !!!

Uh ohhhhh..... we got company....

So I took a short cut and headed back to camp.

Not long after that I spotted some ELK!!

We all met back at camp, our spirits and excitement were high

Sunday morning we got up early and headed to the top of the ridge behind camp.

There was elk sign that was very promising. We eased thru the timber and came upon a very nice bull and a 3 cows.
They made not a peep, just moved away and we never saw them again...

We then went over over to the other side of the ridge and came upon a nice meadow that had recent wallow acticity

Great trip ... Brad will tell it best, but I\'ll add a little along the way.

The pack-in day was great ... sunny and warm. The new (used) Alaknak tent went up quickly and camp was set up easily. The first day\'s hunt went well, and we had a couple bulls spotted by the end of the day, but the guy camping in the meadow had us all worried.

We have lots of pics and vids to post, I hope you enjoy them!

One morning, we were out on an elk expedition and came across some grouse.
Nothing better than fresh grouse for \'camp meat\'!!

Many years ago, my dad showed me a quick easy way to breast out a grouse.

Here is the technique
