Colorado elk diy

One thing I will throw out there is that there are quite a few successful hunters on here who hunt Colorado every year, and I am not aware of any of them who hunt wilderness areas from trailheads. Just some food for thought...

I know dont & wont

It depends on the wilderness areas. You won\'t believe how easy some of them are to get to, and nobody goes there. Elk will go where they aren\'t bothered, and that doesn\'t have to be in the middle of nowhere in the wilderness. Don\'t make the hunt harder than it has to be.

Keep in mind when you say i\'ll just hike into wilderness areas to get away from hunters on a public forum. You\'ve just put that thought into every NR who reads it. It\'s not an original idea. Maybe before the internet, but not anymore.

So you think if i want to do any backpacking my best bet is to do it during bow season when the weather can be better. Are all the archery tags draw tag in the otc units like 2nd and 3rd are otc. sorry I\'m asking so many questions, just not sure of some things well maybe a lot. So if i was going to hunt 2nd or 3rd season you think i should have a base camp at a trail head so i would come back to that every night.

Brady, yes there are a bunch of OTC units for archery as well. Check out the Big Game Regulations Brochure here, page 30 has the map of the OTC units: http://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/RulesRegs/Brochure/BigGame/biggame.pdf

As far as backpacking goes, I would just proceed with caution if you are going to do it during rifle season. I would make sure you don\'t get too far in and that you have a way to check the weather report. Weather can change so fast up there and my main concern with backpacking in would be to find myself miles and miles off the beaten path in a couple feet of snow. You don\'t want to turn what should be a fun elk hunt into a survival experience.

Many of the units out here are OTC. Many hold lots of elk, if you can find them (Same for draw units). The largest herd in the state is the White River herd (Unit 25, 26, 34 (I think, only listing OTC).

As for me (Resident) I\'m going to pack in a few miles. It wasn\'t as bad when I first started out here in 2001. Now anyone can go to a big box store, fling some arrows, buy a left over cow tag, squawk a hoochie momma and think they can hunt elk. They will drive as far as their city 4x4 or ATV will take them, then walk in less than a mile blasting away like a gaggle of geese. By Sunday afternoon they are gone. But they did blow up anything near the trail head. The more adventurous ones will go in up to 2 miles or so.

Anyway, I\'m packing in to get away from the day hunters. I\'m not saying I\'ll see more elk, but I will see fewer people.

Oh, and I do hunt OTC (Except last years rifle RFW hunt).

As for backpack 2nd an 3rd season. Don\'t do it. You will need to drive up pretty high to get to those trailheads. Those roads will be almost impassible after a good snow storm. Many a people have been stranded up on the flat tops in late season. Some of their trucks may still be up there (Until the spring thaw).

Let me know if you are considering Archery OTC. I may have room in my camp.

after doing more research on otc units I\'m pretty sure I\'m going to hunt wilderness area where trails can only be used by horses and by foot. Now i think 24 is what I\'m shooting for, I\'m going to order some topo maps on unit 24 and try to understand how to read those maps and go from there. Does anyone know does that area have a lot of grizzlies or wolves thats not stopping me I\'m just wondering. Also i think going to hunt 2nd or 3rd season and i know the weather can get cold and miserable for backpacking but i really want to stay away from people, So has anyone ever used the kifaru tipi\'s with those titanium stoves? they are pretty light and also the tipi is too was maybe thinking that would keep me warm enough if the weather turned cold. Any one want to go with and teach me a few things about elk hunting. i will pay for there out of state tag. :upthumb:  lol
We are talking a rifle hunt here, right? It seems like the whole population of Denver, Ft. Collins, and Boulder migrate to units 12 and 24 during the rifle seasons. Get ready for a sea of orange in those areas. It gets hunted hard.

This year would be rifle over the counter, cause i will be in alaska caribou hunting 10 days in the middle of sept. 2015 i pretty sure i will be archery hunting since the area i think im going now non res need 1 point to draw so should draw that for some reason i dont i will be hunting 2nd or 3rd season.
Americanbwana-is that an otc archery tag i assume?

I have hunted Unit 23 previously, and just like 12 and 24, it gets hunted hard. But like I said before, you might see a bunch of camps and hunters on the road, but venture off it a little ways and I would never see anyone until I got back closer to a road again.
