Deer 2026

I’m starting my deer season a little earlier than normal. Our any weapon season starts October 10 for deer and elk. The woods are usually crazy with people until the B tag elk season ends on the 24th so I generally go duck hunting then. This year I hung a trail camera in a spot devoid of elk and made a mock scrape to see if whitetail bucks would come in to it this early. I normally do this in early November. We have new rules for game cameras and I can’t use the cellular type and I’ve only checked the camera once so far. I got several photos of this young buck. He came in 4 different times the second day the scent dripper was there. You can see the scent dripper above and in front of him in the daylight photo. I’m going to check it again on Saturday. I’m also planning on setting another mock scrape during my A tag elk season which goes from October 25-29 in an area that I’m guessing is currently being elk hunted. I shot two bucks three days apart in that location a few years ago when I was able to get a second tag. I’ll see if I can find a photo of those two bucks.

The two bucks I shot a couple years ago. Both came out following does in an area they like to feed next to heavy bedding cover.

I checked my camera this morning. This guy is still coming around. The only other buck on the camera is a spike. Lots of does in the area so I’m assuming big bucks will be there at some point.

Now that I look closer at the photos that buck is a 3x3 and the other one is a 3x4. So I guess I have a couple little bucks around.

And of course you need at least one photo like this every time you hang a trail camera.

I checked my camera again today. I got what I think is a different young buck and a pretty chubby looking bear. I hung my other camera on a mock scrape in an area I have been elk hunting so hopefully I get some action on it. I’m planning to hunt deer there around the 4th. I wandered into an area today where I found 11 deer rubs within a 30 foot radius so maybe I should have put it in that area.

Hopefully I can get out next week for a couple days.
Between traveling and working, time is short.

I got photos of a deer I would shoot. He’s been there the last two nights but way after dark. Hopefully he starts coming in during the daylight. And I got a spike that really likes the scent dripper. I think I saw the bigger buck last year the day after I filled my last tag for this area.

I took this photo with my cell phone through my binoculars last year.

I checked the camera today and had this buck back in front of the camera.

Then I sat there for the last hour of the day. I had a doe and spike walk out after only 5 minutes. The spike was limping pretty bad. I thought about shooting him but after watching him for a few minutes I could tell that he was putting some weight on that leg and it didn’t look broken. He came by the camera so I’ll see if I have a photo of what’s wrong with him next time I download the card.

After that a tall spike came out. He left pretty quick and then a much bigger buck came in. I ended up passing on him but I was pretty tempted. He didn’t have very long points but he had pretty good mass and tall antlers and was a little wider than his ears. I watched him work 3 scrapes around my mock scrape. Then he sniffed around my scrape a bunch but didn’t seem like he touched it. After he walked off I heard him working another scrape in the bushes. He was at my scrape for a while so I should have some photos of him too. I’ll post him on here next time I download the card. I’m hunting tomorrow in the area where my other scrape is. It’s been set up there for 10-11 days so I’m anxious to see if I have any bucks there.

And here’s another photo while I’m posting game camera animals. I have a stray cat living in my firewood logs at the property I’m building a cabin on. I put some cat food on my front porch and set up a camera. I got this photo a few hours later. I moved the food to the log pile after this.
