Download the app and sync it to your phone. Much easier to send texts with your phone and you can use the topo map on your phone vs the tiny screen. Congrats on the good find.

The unit arrived today.
It\'s all set up and charged.
Sent a few preset messages to confirm.
All good.
Now I\'m going to leave the unit on standby to check long term battery life

The thing must be broke, Brad.

Your message said you were at that stripper place south of Cheyenne.

Ive had one for 2 years and i love the thing.sometes it takes a while to send and receive but its nice to be able to communicate with your family back home and i like that they can track me in the mountains

Stupid question, but does that change if it is searching for service, similar to a cell phone? I know when I don\'t have good service on my cell, it seems to burn through the battery quicker. I\'m no tech geek, so like I say it\'s probably a stupid question :wtf:

when I \'wake up\' the unit, it seems to be always locked on to satellites.
I have sent a few messages during this time too, and it takes a min or two to send them.

So far, I am pleased with the battery life/test

33hrs - 66%

When I use my unit I turn it off at night, and only power it up a handful of times a day unless I have a place to charge it. I picked up a small solar charger and my unit made it 10 days in the wilderness with over 40 percent left on battery.

If you chose to have it \"track you\" it uses much more battery. I find if you move a lot it takes a couple minutes to send or receive messages.

And as I\'m sure you have seen every message you send comes with complete GPS/Google Maps location that can be looked at. So make sure you have the proper settings on who sees what when you send it. Otherwise your OTC elk hot spot may get crowded in a hurry.

Brad, I think the next test is to try it in the mountains. As soon as the snow melts, you should head to one of your stand locations and try texting me again!

Oh I already know where that option is to turn off.
Thats the first thing I learned how to do :)

They seem to be a real asset to backcountry hunters. With today\'s technology it is becoming cheaper to stay in touch and let family know you are safe.

What do they normally cost Brad?
