Nope, 10 yard frontal shot. Arrow went all the way through his body and stuck into the hind quarter. He was dead in less than 10 sec.

Interesting. What vitals did it hit?

Don\'t really know I did the gutless method to field dress the elk. I knew the arrow went through the intestines so I did not want to open the elk up. The amount of blood that came out, I\'m pretty sure I hit the juggler vain. The elk only went maybe 30yrds 15 of that he was sliding down a small embankment.

Most frontal shots result in trauma to the great vessels feeding the heart (aortic arch, superior vena cava, brachiocephalic veins and arteries).

When you cut one of those large pipes, it\'s all over with very quickly. This is one reason why a broadside lung shot does not usually result in as quick a death...there are a large number of vessels traumatized, but it\'s not the same as \"disconnecting\" the main hoses.

Shooting forward into the \"V\" gives you a greater chance of hitting those vessels in a broadside situation. Just my 2 cents. :)

Jeff: I agree with you whole heartedly. I have done the frontal shot several times and wouldn\'t hesitate to do it again. I also agree the shooting the (V) is a very deadly shot. Only problem is I sure hate to mess up a perfectly good shoulder roast or even two of them, especially with a rifle. That\'s why I still go for the crease on broadside shots. Punch both lungs and don\'t forget there are arteries in that area as well and you\'ll still have an easy tracking job. Probably 100 yds. or less.
