do you quarter your deer...

Every elk that I have shot I have quartered with the gutless method. I have thus done so with every deer as well. However I see guys that don\'t quarter their deer but rather gut and take them out to skin/hang whole at camp. When shot in a area where it can be taken out whole, who prefers to do it this way vs. quartering?

And if you do take it out whole, how do you do the hind end (anus/bladder/pelvis) without breaking the bladder? Any tips? Or good videos?

My doe last year died approximately 50 yards from the truck. I\'m sure that\'ll never happen again  I still, however, did the gutless/quarter method.

We even have a large garage at our disposal for hanging/skinning in town if need be, but I just find the gutless method clean and easy. :dk:

I always gut mine and take it out whole.

However there are some spots in Oklahoma that is down at the bottom of some nasty cliffs and draws, I also have a mountain mule deer hunt that will be starting at least 4 miles from my truck, so those animals will be getting quartered for sure.

Honestly I\'ll probably throw a tarp down, cape it, butcher everything off and just throw the meat in my game bags.

It won\'t take that much time.

I bet I have gutted a couple hundred deer over the years, and drug them back to the truck.
Its a mid-west thing I believe.
But now its mostly gutless for me

When you gut them, its not that difficult to keep the knife blade away from the bladder or colon.
I make an incision around the bung hole as deep as my knife blade staying to the outside of the cavity wall.
Cut down to the pelvis bone, Then I gut it and roll the intestines out, leaving the large intestine attached and pull it thru the pelvic cavity
I have split the pelvis before too.
Splitting the pelvis makes it much easier to drag as the hips move separately.

I do what Brad and Francis do in a way.

I cut well around the behind and then I saw the pelvis bone.
I\'ve never seen a person cut the bladder or anything bad when they just go slow and take their time.

Worse case scenario, you just cut out any meat that may get contaminated.

I have an idea, why don\'t I kill a bunch of deer this year and make a video  :upthumb:

I used to gut and drag my deer out, and every time we got to the truck with it I would tell myself that was stupid not going to do that again. I finally listen to my self and know we do the gutless method and debone the meat. Two people can get a deboned deer out in one trip. Plus some of the drainages that we hunt have been washed out pretty good from that last couple years of flooding, dragging a deer out know would be interesting to say the least. This was last year pack out.

These are great responses, thanks guys for sharing. Very helpful.

So when gutting, if I have the \"backside\" cut out well enough to pull back through, the bladder will roll out with the rest of the guts (after cutting up at the top and pulling down)?

here is a vid that is very similar to how I gut a deer, but I make sure I cut the diaphram sides and esophagus so the guts are much easier to pull out

That\'s a great video Brad. I watched several yesterday and thought that one was probably one of the better ones. Great that you affirmed it. Makes it look fairly strait forward.

I basically debone everything unless it was really close to the truck I would never drag anything.

I like the tab idea. I always told my girls on they\'re first deer to stick their finger up the bung hole as far as it would go, then take your knife and cut around everything that isn\'t finger.

hahhaha..i nominate you for dad of the year..hahhahah.

I have not quartered any deer here in Illinois yet. They never allowed you to quarter a deer until a couple years ago. Now you can quarter it but only after you have checked it in (online or by phone) and you must travel with all the parts and tag together.

So, make sure its legal where you hunt for the deer.
