I would wait till the last day or two in Wyoming this year. But in Colorado or Idaho in an OTC unit I would not pass up an easy shot on a cow.
They taste way better than tag soup.
In 2012 after 13 days of hunting and many blown chances where I needed just one more step from the elk, I dropped the string on a fat calf at 17 yards. Tastey!!!!
Absolutely! In fact, I might try to shoot two this year. My rifle tag will be a cow tag and if a cow gets too close during archery season, you can bet I\'ll be shooting.
2 years ago I had a 1.5 year old cow walking down a trail toward me. I was unsure if I wanted to shoot her and I half heartedly drew as she walked behind a bush. Two things happened...I quickly learned how wary they are as she bolted away seeing me through a bush...and I instantly regretted not taking it more seriously and shooting her. I ended up killing a cow late season. This year I had some cows in bow range opening morning and passed at the advice of a buddy who hunted the unit I was hunting. Ended up with a bull the following weekend. So I guess it depends on the area.
in OTC Colorado I ususally get a cow and an either sex tag so I don\'t get tempted to pass up cows. With out of state tags or tags with points, I get a little more patient...
:shifty: shot a cow this yr. only had 2 days to hunt so did not let her pass by. Wished I had waited as bull was right behind her and went by at30 yds. She is really good eating. Most of the time would wait till end of season
