Elk decoy

I've seen several different types of elk decoys on the market. Has anybody used one and killed an elk with one? If so what brand?

The only two good brands out there are Heads Up Decoy and Montana Decoys. I prefer a Heads up Decoy over the Montana due to light weight and easier to pack and place.

Have had great luck with Montana Decoy, have killed one cow with them, and had other elk in range sight, just no shot.

I have two Montana elk decoys but always forget to take them out. this year we have a new spot that could really make good use of one. Will definitely try it next year.

I hunted with my buddies alot last season(Montana decoy). I was impressed! I will have one next season. In 2011, my buddy was hunting alone. He called in an elk that walked right up to the decoy. He missed the bull! He cow called and the bull ran back up to the decoy and got an arrow in the heart!

I keep ready a lot of good success stories with using them. I plan on getting a heads up and hopefully a Montana as well, before the season starts.

Had one opportunity late season last year and the spike I called to looked up and seen the Heads up Decoy and came running in. He still circled down wind to check the scent but was within 40 yards. I am planning on using it again and now have an antelope decoy thanks to RMA I will put to use in Wyoming this year.

I use the Montana decoy I think its called the Miss September- Have had good success with it but I will probably pick up a heads up as the full body is more work to setup/take down etc...

The Montana Decoy is the only way to go. Compact enough to pack and tuck away when you are finished with it.  Works great

I've used 2 Montana decoys and they definately work in the right situation.  I wrote up my story on another post on decoys earlier and the short of it was I popped it up and a 5 pt. came right in the open before I even had the stakes in the ground!  I did just buy a Heads Up from Cory at the Denver ISE as they are a bit more portable and I like the idea of just putting it up and being able to drop it down.  I think if a bull spots it, I'd want to hide it so he'll come in and try to find out where the cow went!

I carry a montana decoy.  problem is it rarely makes it out of my pack.  seems like when it happens it happens too fast to set it up

You need to try the cow elk Heads up decoy. Folds up nicely and when something starts to happen you can pull it out and have on your bow mount quick. Works great. Hoping to use it on a herd bull soon.

I have used Montana decoys  mostly when crossing big open areas where elk are watching. Easy to pack, add little weight to your pack.

So you put it right on your bow?

Yes the mount is held on by your stabilizer and actually adds a little bit of weight to your bow stabilizing things even more.

You might check to see if Elk101 will have a booth at the Elk Camp or at the ISE in Vegas which is at the same time.  I bought mine at the ISE in Denver and it was $60 vs I think $69+ shipping if you order it via the store.  Anyway that gives you a price to compare to.  I think he is signed up at the Expo in SLC in Feb. if you happen to be going to that as well.

ANYONE KNOW IF HEADS UP WILL BE AT ELK CAMP IN VEGAS, OR IS IT BEST JUST TO ORDER ONLINE??

I am sure you can pick one up from Elk 101 as mentioned. I bought mine last year from them in Salt Lake City. They will be attending the Hunt Expo this year in Salt Lake.
