Elk Hunting Forum - Elk Calling 101

Troy: What you have added is fine, but I still have a problem. Imagine it is September 4th or 24th. You have called in a nice bull for me already and my tag has been filled. I have your cow call and a couple of your mouth reeds, I have practiced with them for over a whole month. Just call me \"Mr. Experience\". I am feeling I can make a decent sound. It Is now my turn to call for you. What do you want me to serve up? Just keep it simple as I don\'t have a lot of judgment to add to my whole month of practice. Did I mention my wife hates those calls in the house or car, and the cat dives for cover as soon as I blow on one, so my practice has really been somewhat limited too.

Well Swede, I might ask you if you could do me a favor and run the video camera. That is what I really need is a guy to just shoot Video.
So maybe just stay back maybe 10 or 15 feet, run the video camera,I will do all of the rest, that way, you can see what I do and how I do it, capture the whole experience on video and watch it all next winter.

If you think you are ready to call for me... We are going to map out a plan. I will explain that in this situation with your limited experience, all I really might want you to do is just keep that bull talking and I will sneak in on him to try to seal the deal. First and foremost ... Watch the wind at all times! So in that scenario bugles or cow calls will work. Just keep using the call he is responding to the best. I will try to sneak in and get a shot. you are probably using an Orange Enrager and OR a High Heel Hottie.

Or I would try to get to where we can see or almost see the elk herds butts. I would setup there and have you go back 75 yards or so . Tell you to get IN some cover,You probably Will Not see the shot anyhow,so get in lots of cover where you can make a crap load of noise, but the elk can\'t see you calling. So Enough Cover to hide at least 1 bull and a cow or two from the Real bulls perspective, we do not want him to question why he can\'t see the other elk. There is too much cover for him to See them, so he HAS TO get closer! NOW you can do a A breeding sequence on the High Heel Hottie. Loud Demanding calls , bugle as best you can like crazy. You will direct your calls toward the bull and down so he thinks you are closer than you actually are or directly behind you.( this depends upon how far you had to go back from the shooter, for the right calling setup) You are also breaking some brush and raking to add realism. Hopefully he will come strolling right by me... and I can get a shot. the more times a Team has worked on this the better it works. If the SETUP is right, and the calls sound pretty good the shots will come!

There is a bunch of Mentoring right there!!!

Troy: I can follow that real easy. Sounds like a plan. Not sure what I am supposed to do with the camera, but I will not forget it. I like the Orange Enrager. It sounds better than Kate Perry on Saturday night. Actually my wife and cat don\'t care for either, but who cares, we have a plan here.
I sure get lost when I hear \"do this if...\" \"and do that if..., except on Thursdays, bla, bla, bla.\"
Thanks for mentoring a newbie. :D

From my perspective and experience Corey\'s video was right on. When I started bowhunting elk I made basic sounds and got the elk to give away their position. Then, the hunt was on. The past few years I\'ve felt my brain was overloaded with calling details. Analyzing every sound made me unsure of what I should do in virtually any situation. The video made me rethink my calling strategy.

Thanks for posting the vid.

Amen to that Frank. The main thing a bull is telling me when he bugles is where he\'s at. Don\'t get much simpler than that!
