Elk season eve meal....

It's the night before Elk opener......
The sun is going down, the temps are dropping, you've got a nice little fire going, and you're listening to an elk bugle off in the distance.

So what elk season eve meal are you treating yourself to? Do you have a go to meal or does it change ever year?

Mine is pretty simple: marinated steak tips, baked sweet potato with butter, and some asparagus with melted butter.  I'm drooling right now thinking about it. In fact I had that for dinner tonight, but it just doesn't taste the same unless I'm up in the mountains.

How about you all?

Ours is typically pretty similar to yours. Steaks on the grill with mashed potatoes and sweet rolls. Nothing like loading up on a good meal right before the season starts, especially when you have ample time to make it!

I grab a burger from the last town I pass before I head off to the trailhead. I do make it a point to have fresh backstraps with grilled taters and onions after a packout.

I'll be having some elk enchiladas tonight at 10k! I dehydrated them so I'll add a little water when we finish our pack in, can't believe the opener is tomorrow!

Good luck to you, UtahJimmy!

I'm not sure but I hope it is something better than a peanut butter samich. Lol

Not sure yet either but we do our big meal at lunch. Hate sleeping on a full stomach.

Howdy.  I'm fond of chicken and dumplins, a side of mac & cheese, and a cherry fried pie for desert.  :-0  It's my good luck meal!

I freeze elk steak chucks and have them in a light marinade. Pack them in frozen by the time we hit camp they are thawed. And then a handful of red potatoes to sink near our fire.  Then from there jerky freeze dried meals clif bars and protein based trail mix for us.

Steak from the best restaurant in the town i'm in before heading out the next morning.

I read long ago that meat eaters stink compared to fish eaters and vegetarians.  So I tried an (unscientific) experiment:  I reduced my red meat consumption dramatically and increased my consumption of fish to fill the gap beginning about 30 days before the season.

I planned precooked salmon, halibut, and tuna meals for most evening meals and ate soy or whey protein based protein bars and PB&J sandwiches on the hunt.

The increase in the number of close encounters with game was unbelievable.  I still have the same problem as everyone when a bull comes in and stops in exactly the wrong place for an arrow to find home, but the results were so dramatic that I have continued to transition to a fish eater during the fall.

So my evening meal before the first day is usually precooked salmon, rice, salad, broccoli, pears and in bed by 7:30.  That gives me an extra half hour in the morning (3:30) to fumble through the routine the first morning with time for an hour or so hike in the dark to be set up at dawn.

To make this work, I have to camp away from those folks who run their generators late into the night.

I'm hoping to have harvested a whitetail up north before I make the trek down. If that's the case, I will have a nice slab of backstrap, sweet potato, bacon wrapped asparagus and 2 fingers of Pendleton's to ensure a solid nights rest.

From then on, breakfast is oatmeal and coffee, lunch is homemade jerky (probably goose), almonds, and, spinach chips. Dinner.... well... hopefully elk!

We always stop at the Star restaurant in Elko, NV on our way to Idaho. We eat half of the huge portions there and the other half when we get to Idaho. I usually get the pork chops. It's our tradition now. We don't care if itsets us back a few hours, we stop there every time.
