Entering a P&Y elk?

Heck yea i would nothing like having your name in a book for people to see. And to me I think it shows the animal a little reconition that he deserves for getting to be that big.

I haven\'t entered any of my animals that would qualify for P&Y yet and probably won\'t. I have antelope, mule deer, and bear that would qualify. Unfortunately, no elk that big yet. But I did have them all mounted. Not sure I would do another elk though. No place to hang it.

I have no need to see my name in the book and I sure wouldn\'t pay for that honor. But I have several friends who like the recognition and I\'m very happy for them. It just isn\'t my thing.

I probably would since it is only $35. I think it would be something to be proud of and having the certificate would be cool to potentially display with the animal. It would just make telling the story that much cooler in my opinion. Getting my name in the record book would be the last reason I would do it as that wouldn\'t do a whole lot for me. Who actually looks through those anyway?

I have taken a P&Y bull the last 2 years.
I got the the 2012 bull Officially Scored, but didnt enter it.
I \'green\' scored my 2013 bull and it would have made it, but I didnt enter either.

Why? Not sure

If I\'m fortunate enough to bag an elk large enough someday then I will register it. But, I\'m darn happy killing smaller legal bulls too in the mean time!

I think this is a good opportunity to make some guesses!
Pikemaster & Herb and maybe others may know the answer to the 61 bull :)

My 61 bull on bottom - my OTC 2013 bull on the top

I remember you posting the score on your 61 bull, so I won\'t guess on that one. I would think your bull from last year wouldn\'t be too far behind that, maybe 10 points or so? The mass is what keeps me thinking it\'s closer...either way, two really good bulls and one hell of a bull for an OTC hunt!

Edit: I just noticed that you said about a 10\" difference between the two. You must have posted that at the same time as me, haha!

I have no idea what either would score, never killed anything really big.
as far as would I put it in the book, prob not. because a score doesn\'t really matter to me, an second, I don\'t know if it would happen out west or not but back in mo if you killed one folks would follow you around an see where you hunt, and or road hunt all around it. better just to keep it quiet

Nothing against it ... but nope, not for me.

The thing is, I\'m impressed with guys who have multiples of animals in there ... it\'s a game they have chosen to play, and they\'ve done it well.

I feel that if I\'m not going to set some sort of \"goal\" (and a high one) that involves scoring antlers, I\'m not going to do it just to do it.

Analogy: My family is involved in endurance horse riding. There are people who each year are out to put 1000+ miles on a horse competitively, or get a certain number of best-condition or top-ten finishes. Admirable goals. Me? If I ride an event, it\'s to finish, and maybe I\'ll do a few in a given year. To me, I wonder \"Why am I doing this?\" sometimes ... If I\'m not going to be out front, it kind of makes me wonder why I\'m going at all ... so I\'d rather just enjoy trail riding on my own.

The guys and gals who have 10,000 or 20,000 lifetime miles are impressive, but it\'s a measuring tool that they chose and then went out and did it. Measuring myself against them with their measurements doesn\'t seem all that interesting.

Same thing with hunting.

Would you enter a bull elk if it scores enough?

Why?

Why not?
No.

I do not care to see my name in print.

I have nothing against it. It is just not for me.

Stating as a member of P&Y, I will enter all animals that meet the minimum that I harvest. Why? Because the I believe that joining and being active in a group that promotes bowhunting and it\'s heritage is something that we all should be interested in. As bowhunters, organizations like Pope and Young along with other state bowhunting organizations represent all bowhunters. I promote fair chase bowhunting like most everyone else, why not support an organization that promotes conservation, fair chase hunting, getting youth involved and education?

Entering an animal can be looked at in different ways, most non-members who do not know what P&Y stands for look at it from an egotistical view. As a member I do not, I look at it as a way to participate and get others involved as I did with my friend. He harvested a gross 306 net 294 bull OTC this year and I had encouraged him to join via entering his animal.

If you join, go to a bi-annual convention. It\'s a great experience to meet like minded people just like ourselves and meet new friends you\'ll have for life.

P&Y also puts out quarterly publications that display what the club is all about...conservation, involvement and fair chase bowhunting which are great reads as well.

I wouldn\'t enter my elk if I did shoot one big enough to quallify. I have several whitetail big enough. None of them entered. To me it is not about what others think they are MY trophies. Even the ones not big enough.

For me the answer is no. I have a mt lion , bear, and a whitetail that would make P&Y. Never entered them but did use their scoring system to measure them myself. Why? I guess just not worth the trouble to get officially scored.

The 2012 Unit 61 bull scored 295 gross

The 2013 OTC bull scored ~285ish
Dang! I missed it by 3 on the small one and 4 on the big one. Not bad for the WAG method of scoring
