Favorite camo pattern?

I know, I know, people were killing elk in blue jeans and flannel shirts...but if you had a choice, what would you pick as your favorite camo pattern?

For whatever reason I\'ve come to like the Max 1. It probably doesn\'t matter honestly but I at least tried to pick one brand/style so my tops/bottoms match. :dk:

And then I put on my jacket (not max 1) and throw it all to hell. :lol:

I like to mix it up.... Mainly going to be wearing AF issue OCP\'s (multicams) bottom and Max1 tops. Maybe a little predator grey mixed in as well.

I often wear faded Mossy Oak Brush because it looks like an elk\'s mottled tan color. I get away with a lot of movement that way.

If ambushing from a ground blind spot, I like any darker timber color to blend in with pines/spruces. In Aspen transition I like Max HD. For all around elk hunting I like neutral gray wool, which isn\'t mottled at all but really blends into the woods.

I love the various Sitka patterns because I can see other hunters wearing them from long distances, and go the other way.

I like what is free......

I wear issued OCP military pants, I have dark green cabelas wool pants, and..... levis :lol:

I have some cheaper under armor zip ups, some scent blocker jacket that I bought a few years ago, and a giant full body cabelas suit for when it\'s cold.




I think it was Will who posted his kill in a green shammy shirt. I have a bunch of those too that I may start trying out.

Blacktail Bob Ameen, who is one of the best bowhunters in the world, thinks camo is a joke. The two guys I bowhunted with in Australia, also world-class hunters, had a saying, \"camo-schmamo, mate\".

IMO, the real value of camo is to give confidence to the hunter, not to fool the animal. Plus, is feels kind of cool to dress all up in our little hunting costumes!

I like ASAT, I confess that several young female elk have found me very attractive in it. Unfortunately, is hasn\'t worked as well on the human ladies. I noticed bugling to my wife hasn\'t been a very effective attractant either, unless accompanied by the sound of crumpled money. The ladder being extremely effective.

I have preferred Max 4 for quite a few years, simply because I think it\'s the closest to blending into the mountain areas that I have found. Most typical camo patterns are made for the midwest and just look way too dark to me. Although the Max 4 has reeds and is supposed to be more of a marshy look, the colors seem to work. Granted, I typically top that off with a bright orange vest, but at least the elk can\'t see my arms!

The elk can\'t see your orange vest, either. To them, it\'s just a gray blob. When I guided rifle hunters I used to call bulls in to within a few yards of my hunters wearing blaze orange hats, vests or coats. Once I called a big 6X bull into within 30 yards when holding two horses wearing full orange sheets, and I was wearing an orange hat. Unfortunately, my hunter only had a cow tag. :lol:

ASAT tops with tan pants. Rain/outer jacket is mossy oak breakup old pattern. If I forget my black merino wool gloves, I sometimes have to wear my pink merino wool gloves. My goal is to not appear as a big blob.

Personally, I think camo patterns are for keeping other hunters from seeing you. Since I travel >0.5 mile from the road, I rarely see other hunters. The terrain is mostly medium to dense pine forest.

Last year, a hunting partner could not see me slightly in the trees. I was giving him slow motion arm/hand signals to help with his stalk on some elk. Unfortunately, he could not see me, however, I clearly saw him. I am short with very short arms, so perhaps that was a factor. The elk did not see me either.

I even have a dark red daypack since no camo pack fits me. I once misplaced a camo fanny pack in brush. It took me a bit to find it.

I have a bunch of miss matched camo. I tend to like Mossy Oak the best. Like others have said it really don\'t matter to a animal. Like Lou said I have arrowed allot of Whitetails inside 20 yards wearing blaze orange.

You are right Lou, although there have been many debates about what colors elk truly can see, I can tell you that hunter orange isn\'t one of them! I too have had many close encounters with elk while in orange. Back in my youth days, it happened in the full orange jumpsuit - orange bibs and an orange jacket to go with my orange hat. Basically, take the Michelin man and color him hunter orange and that was me!

Truthfully, I still like to wear camo when hunting for a few reasons: first, it can help break up other lines so you don\'t look like a blob, as mtnmutt said. I\'ll take any advantage there that I can get. They are also made for hunters, so they wick moisture, wear better in certain areas, etc. It\'s also nice to have a dedicated set of clothing just for hunting. If I\'m going to do that, might as well have them in camo!

I like the Sitka forest camo, but this year they are doing away with that pattern. However, still have a lot of it in the garage. Plus, a new box just showed up with a bunch of their whitetail pattern.

I am glad that you go the other way when you see my Sitka, that means I will be all alone with the elk. :dance2:

Totally agree with the \"camo schmamo\" comment. Camo is designed to appeal to people. I buy clothes for the quality of the garment not for the paint job

I also buy the best quality I can find for the cheapest price with the latter taking precedent over the former! It really is amazing what a person can come up with if he is patient.
