my wife chose this year's trip.  next year, my turn!!

i warned her, it might be cold.  there is a 5% chance i am going to see the northern lights in Finland (bucket list, those crazy lights)

95% chance we are going to AK.  i wont be able to drag my wife in on an alpine lake landing drop-off hunt..aint gonna happen.

but sightseeing AK, doing some (lots) of fishing..and grouse hunting.  believe it or not, i want to hike the big mountains in AK looking for spring grouse.  it is legal to plink them from the trees with a .22 rifle. i can hunt them here with a .22 handgun, but if you've seen me shoot a handgun, you would understand my predicament. :)

i am on the 10-day, vetting process - making sure i have my full and healthy mental faculties - waiting period for my LAST gun!!  i'm done.  from here on out, if i want a new gun, an old gun needs to go.  i have a gun for every purpose i can dream of.  i will more than likely sell my 257 weatherby for a 270 WSM.

i have a Savage Mark II FS-SV .22 waiting for me.  just ordered a Vortex scope from Elknut.  Savage has a rebate going on, that makes is perfect.  my brother has the same gun, and we were shooting hovering yellow jackets at 30 yards.  he puts a suppressor on his.  me..haha..not were i live.

i cant believe i waited this long to buy a modern .22 rifle. i'm done.  i can hunt anything from yellow jackets to elk with what i have.  done and done.

i cant believe i'm dragging my wife to AK.  i hope they have SPA days there for when i'm chasing birds. :D

Cliff, you can bring my S&W model 17 .22 if you want. It's a 6" barrel and may help you be a bit more accurate :p

I like the rifle set up!

Cliff, let us know what you think of the Savage if you get it. I'm debating on picking up a .22 rifle at some point in the near future as well, so anxious to hear your review. I've been leaning towards a Ruger 10/22 Target model, but I'm certainly not committed yet.

i can review it now!!  my brother has the exact same gun.  he had to add some fabric (magpul?) cheek piece to raise his face so he can peek thru the scope easier.  he also has a suppressor on his.

the thing is super accurate with any ammo.  this last NM hunt, we had down time.  we would open up a packet of restaurant jelly and wait for the yellow jackets and horseflies to show up.  i was shooting my .22 pellet gun.  my buddy jack shoots a Savage "RASCAL"..google it.  it is a toy.but accurate!!  we would zap hovering yellow jackets at 30 yards.  same hole accuracy at 30 yards for sure.  the trigger is bone stock on my brother's gun and it is crispy clean.

i think the gunstock is a bit tiny.  but my goal is to fit it in a pack.  i might upgrade to a BOYD stock one day.  just to get the cheek fit better.

to add:

if i had a complaint..the OEM stock is kinda cheap feeling.  it is light, which makes the gun feel really nose heavy.  even worse with that suppressor hanging off the front.  being a tiny gun, it isnt unwieldy.  but it is nose heavy.

Cliff, we went to AK 2 years ago so if want any info on our trip I'd be more than happy to share.  Anchorage -> Homer(overnight Halibut fishing trip so 2 day limit x 2 people) -> Seward(sockeye salmon, Aialik bay kayak trip) -> Anchorage(flight seeing over Denali).

The all day kayak trip will get the wife back on your side....guaranteed!!

no..unshot to date. :(

we have CRAPPY gun ranges, and ZERO ability to drive out to the boonies to shoot into a sanddune or anything.  additional cost to living and making a living where i do, i suppose.

my first go should be thurday morning, if work-S doesnt hit the fan.

the scope is the 2-7x Diamondback from Vortex.

Holy kamolee!  This thing is accurate!  0.5? groups at 50 yards. At 25 yards, I think I spell my name in bullet holes.

It hates fancy ammo. I mean the groups are more than adequate.  But with a slower 40 gr bullet. One ragged hole at 25 yards. Which I think is the squirrel red-zone :)

Next weekend I?m gonna explore the Mohave desert. Quail and bunny season !
