Everytime I get my boots broken in just perfect....that point where they feel like a nice pair of tennis shoes....they leak! Son of a gun! My lowas leak in both boots. I guess it\'s time to start hunting for a new pair of boots.

I went to un-insulated LaCrosse all leather boots last year.

Tough to break in, but no leaks and if you keep them conditioned, very comfortable and warm

Are they goretex or do you just treat them?

I saw Sierra trading post had soloman 4d 2 gtx on sale for 119. A quick trip to cableas and a price match and I have a new pair of boots. Not bad considering they had a $240 cabelas sticker price.

No Gore-Tex for me anymore

Here they are before and after I treated them

I have had the same issue with many boots. Nothing a good spray-on water proofing can\'t fix. I water proof my boots before every season and have no issues anymore.

We used to use beeswax on leather boots back when I wore them... Most everyone around here except for the old guys wear rubber boots to hunt in. I\'m old but have gone to lighter in weight neoprene boots for the last several years.. Still have some older leather boots but they just decorate the floor against the wall in my bedroom.

Do you have a preferred water proofing spray? they are mostly leather with some synthetic. I use obernaufs on the leather which beads the water pretty well. Wouldn\'t mind spraying them especially the synthetic. Lots of water proofing sprays on amazon.

I think the last one I bought from WalMart. Nothing fancy obviously.

I too use the Walmart spray. I found it in the sporting goods by the tents. It has an orange cap. I spay my boots yearly before elk season.

I also tried it on some pants. I use to wear the military BDUs pants the 50/50 summer ones. They dry quicker than the 100% cotton ones. I hung the pants on the clothes line and soaked them with the spray from the bottom up to the inseam. I then let them dry and sprayed them with the garden hose. They repelled water pretty good. Helped with the morning dew from soaking the pants and wicking down the socks and getting my feet wet.

I\'m interested in this thread.

my experience (that goretex leaks after 2-3 years of use) has been similar. I\'ve never tried spray on waterproofing.

I bought a pair of Salomon Quest 4D\'s last month on sale at STP for $120. wearing them now at work. reasonably comfortable, but havent seen bad weather yet. uninsulated, and very lightweight.

I have used the spray on water-proofing on my boots and nylon tents with \'ok\' results.
What I didnt like about the stuff was the TERRIBLE smell. And it lingers for a long time.

I bought a pair of Danner Ridgemaster boots that list for 249 on ebay for 99. The boots were new but rejected by Danner for leaking. They rejected the whole lot. Someone must have bought them cheap and was selling them on Ebay. They explained in the description that they were defects and could not be returned for warranty. Danner punched a hole in the tongue to mark them. Anyway I sprayed them good with the waterproofing spray that has silicone in it. I wore them in 2013 in Colorado elk hunting. It rained 10 out of 13 days. I wore the boots walking in wet grass and my feet stayed dry. This year will be my 4th year and the Danners are still holding up.

Yes The smell is bad. I spray my gear a month ahead of season and let it air out plenty. I forgot about that. Good memory Brad :upthumb:

I\'ve always used the old \"Sno-Seal\" wax type stuff. If its warm and sunny, I set my boots out on our south sidewalk for about an hour to get them quite warm. I then use an old sock and rub the sno-seal in. If I decide to do it and its an overcast day, I put my boots in the oven at 200 deg until they are somewhat soft and then apply the sno-seal. I\'ve had good success with the sno-seal.

As far as boots...I\'m looking for some new ones as well. Hopefully I find some here at Bass Pro that will work. I hate ordering by mail and trying them on and mailing them back. A big disadvantage to being in the midwest and shopping for elk boots.

I had same frustration. After years of marginal performance with lower end boots, I wanted to try some \"high end\" boots. such as the Lowa, Crispi, Kenetreks, etc. NO ONE carries much stock here in TX in those lines. REI had the best sampling, but it was still minimal. Mostly hiking boots.

I ordered a set of boots from SportsmansGuide.com, but ended up sending them back when they 1. weren\'t that comfortable even after a week of \"break in\" and 2. failed my leak test (stand in 4\" water in a tub for 5 minutes)

I still expect just about any boot to leak after a couple years of hard use. To be fair, I don\'t JUST hunt in the boots I buy. I wear them to work (mostly office environment), so they get lots of miles on them.

it\'s my understanding that boot problems first entered the world in chapter 3 of Genesis (the fall). men have been cussing boots since.

LOL Shane

Yeah, I\'ve had boots leak from early on in their lives which is why I just spray them now. Brad is right, it does stink a bit, but nothing that won\'t go away after sitting out in the sun for a bit. Since I started spraying my boots I can\'t remember having wet feet once.

I bought some nice leather lined Lowa Tibets last year because my old Gore Tex\'s were pretty much dead. I rubbed Nikwax waterproof and conditioner on them. They were good through morning dew, but with afternoon thunderstorms every day, they were soaked through after three days. Once they were soaked through, there was no stopping it or going back. In the midday sun on day 5, I took them off and worked hard to get them to dry out as much as possible. The next morning water was sloshing around just from the morning dew. Seems like once the waterproofer failed, there was no going back. I should say, I also use the sitka flash gaitors to keep the top of my boots and socks dry.

cohunter14, have you noticed your spray deteriorates the leather or breaks it down at all? I think I have and use the exact spray you have (with orange cap from Wal-Mart) on my rain gear after the gore tex deteriorates. Curious how the silicon holds up to walking through grass/branches/hitting rocks, etc on your boots? I am hoping to find something that will hold up to at least 7 days in a row. Also, have you noticed if your feet sweat more after using it, since the silicon probably prevents your boots from breathing?

Thanks!

I use Camp Dry spray that I get at Wally World. I use it on my hunting boots and work boots. Like others have said it does stink but it fades in a couple days. It holds up good in harsh elements for me. My work boots go through h::l and I spray them twice a year. I have not noticed the spray affecting the leather at all. As far as sweating I can\'t really say since my feet sweat all the time in boots. I wear uninsulated in the winter at work.

My feet sweat all the time too.
I started wearing smart wool socks all the time and that helped a lot.
If I wear cotton during the day, I have to change them at lunch.

Obennaufs on my leather boots has been all I needed.

I will add that when its really wet or dewy, I just wear my un-insulated LaCrosse rubber boots for a morning hunt
