I have never been Elk hunting but would like to get out and give it a try. I am from MN and have never been on an out of state hunt before and am thinking it would be a good idea to go with guide who can show me the ropes. Is there a state and or guide service anyone could recommend?

I went on my first guided hunt this year for elk in Idaho. It was an archery hunt. I was in the same boat as you. Just wanted to learn the ropes. I learned alot on this trip. It was a back country hunt with horses. I highly recommend Wildtimes Adventure out of Challis, Id. We seen alot of elk and it was on public land. I lost a really good bull. Look them up and if you need more info let me know. I'm hooked on elk hunting now.

Before you drop the money on a guided hunt, try networking with some locals. you will be surprised how many people are willing to help. If you ever draw in AZ, look me up.

Thanks will do.

It really depends what you want out of the hunt. If you just want to get out and enjoy some elk hunting and enjoy the outdoors with a lesser chance of being successful you can still have a great time and as mentioned there are a lot of people on most forums that will help lead you in the right direction. If you want the hunt of a lifetime and have a little extra money to spend you can purchase a banquet tag in Utah and hire Hightop Outfitters. They will get the job done and it will more than likely be a 350 class bull or bigger. Check out their website. I have hunted with them and know several that have with successful hunts. I don't know anyone who has went home empty handed. I plan to buy a banquet Taganrog this year and hunt with them again.

I'm a newbie too and have not drawn out here in Utah yet but I keep trying interesting I thought I would try drawing for a Archery Hunt this year and try that KMbingham92 I gather you are from utah also any advice?  Money is tight lol.

How many points do you have for Utah? If you are looking for an archery elk hunt you will need around 8 for a Book Cliffs tag or Central Mountains Manti. Both units you can find good bulls. I have a buddy that is trying to draw one of these tags. If his shoulder surgery goes good he will be hunting one of these this year for sure. There are many other options but these are two of my favorites. You will want to check out the Eastman's Bowhunting Journal MRS section when it comes out with Utah in it. Or you can just go to the Utah DWR site and figure things out there. You can message me if you want and we can discuss.

If I were going to do a guided hunt I would do one with a guide who hunts wilderness land and not private. A guide who hunts wilderness land will know how to really hunt and will probably be a good caller. I watch the private land hunts on TV and most of the guides do not call very well and already know where to ambush elk so the experience will not be as educational.

The rest of the guys are right in trying to find another group or hunter who is willing to take you along and show you the ropes (a lot cheaper).

I have never used them, but they seem to be a top notch outfit to me is Winterhawk Outfitters in Colorado. They sponsor a lot of events, plus a drawing for a free elk hunt each year. They should be able to provide prior hunters names for references. I know they hunt the Flat Tops in Colorado, which is suppose to hold the most elk in Colorado, or at least used to.
Maybe some Colorado folks can advise otherwise, but I would look them up if you want a guided hunt.
