So we hunted Montana the last 3 years and have bought leftover tags each year. Well this is the first year they have ever sold out of out of state tags. Need a back up plan quickly. Idaho or Colorado or anything else?
You will have quite a selection of OTC units to choose from in Colorado for archery during that time frame. Check out pages 37 and 38 here in the Big Game Brochure:
To follow up with everyone else, here is another link I like to use to look for OTC Archery Elk Tags- state by state. Here is Colorado's OTC Archery Units for Non-residence.
Great. Thanks a lot. Will check those out and let you know. Montana has been really good to us for the last 3 years but Colorado is closer and we've been wanting to go there and check it out. Do you guys think that muzzle loader season affects bow hunting and we should go earlier or should we not worry about it?
I wouldn't worry about it. CO ML laws are loose powder, no sabots & open sights and it's 100% draw (as far as I know) so a very limited amount of smoke polers in the archery units. You'll see far more archery hunters than ML hunters.....
I wouldn`t overlook the ID panhandle either; I guess it mostly depends on how you define success.
If your success depends on how many inches; then ID is better. If your more interested in glassing big basins and the overall outdoor experience, I would go to CO.
As far as ML season in CO; I have personally only heard a handful of shots in SEP over 7 years, and wouldn't let that sway my decision.
If you're still thinking maybe about Idaho, I'll extend the invitation to come up. I have all of Sept. off work but none of the guys I hunt with can get away this season. Here is a pic from one of my cameras Ihave out from last Thursday. Let me know if that is something you guys might be interested in.
