Hoochie Mamma\'s

Back several years ago when I was contest calling, I don\'t know how many Hoochies I have won. I always ended up either throwing them away or giving them to some kid that showed a little interest in calling.

About the only good thing I can say about them is that they are a pretty decent squirrel call. If you depress the rubber bulb slowly, without making a sound, until you feel the plunger button, all you have to do is work the button fast and it sounds just like a fox squirrel chattering and barking. (Most elk hunters hate Squirrels) :mg:

In my heavily hunted, heavily called unit, I had 10x bad experiences for every good one. The cows look, look around, then run. Pretty easy to peg a HM caller sitting in a spruce clump, pushing that bulb. Whenever someone gives me one, I give it to the kid of an elk hunter so he\'ll run around the house driving everyone nuts. Like a drum set, except worse.

BTW, you can sound like a whole herd of different elk with one diaphragm and one good open reed call.

Hoochie Mamas remind me of a clown bulb-horn. Eschew the clown horn!

I have won quite a few Hoochie Mammas in contests as well. I NEVER use one on a public land elk hunt. I have been with guys who have spooked elk using them. So now I ask them to please leave them at home or at least in the pickup. I just don\'t understand why you would put your faith in a HM call when a you can learn how to use a good bite call like my High Heel Hottie in about 3 minutes. It sounds better than most guys do even with a diaphragm, and a lot more versatile than a dang HM.

As a side note I was talking to Dieter Kaboth a 4 time world champion elk caller. We both were commenting on how many elk we have each called in from unbelievable distances with a simple bite and blow call. I have also had the same conversation with World Champ Big Al Morris. He pretty much said the same thing. So if guys like that use a bite call as well as a diaphragm.... Shouldn\'t You? As far as elk hunting gear goes The High Heel Hottie might be the best $13.00 dollars you have ever spent? Especially if you can\'t blow a diaphragm call.

I\'m with John, I have one and use it when trying to sound like more than one cow talking. Good, bad or what ever, it is a tool to be used. Do elk come running to it the min. you use it most likely not. But show me a call on the market today that will. Its how the user applies it and the knowledge of elk talk that gets the job done. That\'s my 2 cents anyway.

I ordered 2 High Heel Hotties today.
Looking forward to trying them
I have one and it\'s in my lanyard. Great call! I\'ll never leave home without the Orange Enrager and High Heeled Hottie.

I hope I didn\'t offend anyone with my comments. I certainly didn\'t intend to. I don\'t speak from elk hunting experience. I\'ve been researching elk calling and calls for about 9-10 months now and that\'s all the experience I have. I was only applying turkey hunting experience to the HM. I just looked at the HM like it was a shortcut to achieving quality elk sounds.

In turkey hunting shortcuts will work sometimes, especially on private land or early season on a young 2 year old but once season has progressed those birds have heard it all and get quiet. It\'s at that point you have to be able to create realistic sounds and create scenarios that are also realistic and not along a gravel road, ATV trail or logging road.

That was just my take on it from someone with my background. Again, I wasn\'t trying to offend anyone just wanted to share my take on it as a turkey hunter trying to learn the elk hunting game.

Sorry, not trying to keep this thread alive! :wtf:

I don\'t want to promote Hoochie\'s as a crutch, but aren\'t they better for hunters to use than blowing internal/external reeds badly? Are we willing to say, if you can\'t blow a call....then don\'t call at all?

You should watch my video then and flame me if I am doing it wrong!!!!!

I don\'t want to be a bad caller or be doing it wrong haha

I wouldn\'t exactly go that far! There are several bite and blow external reed calls out there that are fairly decent sounding calls. But I will say this, \"If you can\'t do it right, don\'t go out there messing things up for everyone else\"!
