How close is a call in?

That makes good sense to me Jeff. But, the initial question was how close do they have to be to consider it a call in. So, without a decoy, does that change the distance then?

A \"call in\" would be a term to describe an encounter, which is going to vary according to the individual situation.

I was hoping we were getting away from classification \"labels\" like \"triple excited estrus challenge sequence\" and such

I consider it a call-in of the elk gets within my stickbow range. It may not present a good shot angle or opportunity, but that\'s sort of how I figure it.

I know guys who claim a \"call-in\" when they get an answer and the elk moves toward them a little bit.

cohunter14: You can bring them in closer if you have a good set up. Jeff mentioned using a decoy. That is a good answer. Another part of the calling equation needs to be where you call from. Many hunter are caught in the wrong place as if they really did not expect an elk to come. When that happens you are stuck. Remember to call only from where you have cover, or you will need to move quickly just as soon as you call, so you are closer to where the elk will hang up. Usually this calling is best done in pairs, so you can both be set when the calling begins.

I concur with everything that has been said...hopefully me being a \'non-caller\' and asking a few questions will help some newbies :D Personally, I have learned a bunch on this one. You guys are not good at persuading me to keep rifle hunting...I know this site is a non-profit, but I might have to start a donation fund thread for me to get into archery

I really enjoy reading these threads that technically don\'t have anything to do with how I actually hunt...there is so much to be learned from some of you.

Great Thread and discussion here. I would agree with WW on this one. He calls in a lot of elk like I do. So what should we call the 2 man team \"call in.\"... If the caller is 100 yards from the elk, Hmm ???

IMO - I called this elk in... and close enough :)

To me, its a call in if the elk either came in and got an arrow or should have got an arrow i.e. poor settup

Hahaha, gotta love spikes! Hunting would be a lot easier if all elk had the intelligence of spikes.

If they can make it to 2 1/2 year olds and not pick up too much more intelligence...SLAMDUNK!

Now don\'t go jumping all over me, it\'s just my opinion! But for the two man situation where the caller is farther back, you have to consider why the shooter is positioned way forward of the caller. I always figured it was to help overcome the possibility of a hang up but still have a shooting situation.

So I suppose you could call it either way. You did call it in close enough for the shooter but it still could be a hang up in relation to the callers location.

Maybe we could call it a \"converted hangup\" :eh:

Personally, I\'m going to call it a dead bull...and commence with the high fives :upthumb:

Well it would be hard to sit around the fire latter that night and have nothing to talk about !! Well hunting buddy I\'m going to bed since you never called that elk in that was 50 yards from me !! We don\'t have anything to talk about now !! Try better tomorrow for me !!!!! Good luck with that one.

Guys really if you call to elk and they approach you it\'s a call in !!

If you saw an elk you probably called it in or you wouldn\'t have seen it at all !! To me if an elk comes looking for you it\'s a call in and it doesn\'t matter if you shot it or not. I\'m not out there to just go on a hike. I\'m there to call to elk and hopefully the elk will call back and want to come meet there new friend !!

I don\'t care if you need scents, calls, raking trees or decoys if an elk walks up to you..........He\'s called in !!

Well, I\'ve been following this thread for a while & kept my mouth shut. :silent: just getting a response or getting a bull, or cows interest is not considered a call in for me. ...that should just be called \"had em going\". Personally, I will take credit for a call in if a shot is presented, whether it\'s bow range or with a rifle. If that elk gives me a shot because of calling to him I feel it was because of my calling. I can\'t take credit for ever calling an elk for a rifle hunter because I\'ve never done it. I take that back. Last fall, I did call a cow in for the landowner who had given us permission to cross his property. Even tho the cow stepped out 100 yds from me, she presented that guy with a 40 yd shot. Heck yes I called her in! I love to call them in to rock throwing distance, but don\'t believe that is what\'s required to call it a call in. Agree with Travis & Jeff\'s post above.
