September is sure getting close and I sure am excited, but also a bit anxious, to go hunt elk in the rut for my first time. I'll be going solo for 2 weeks to MT, but I'm internally struggling on what 2 weeks to go. I can't go the first week, so that's easy to eliminate, but what's everyone's thoughts on what 2 weeks to go? Do I hit the 2nd and 3rd week to be out there for what is typical the peak of the rut? Or, do I push my dates to catch the first week of October (since we're talking MT) like some podcast guys have mentioned due to the rut still going and most hunters "hanging" it up by then?

If it was me, I'd go 9/13 and catch the end of the pre-rut and the rut. The moon is pretty bad for most of early October as well, while it's perfect over those two weeks in September.

I agree. I’ve had great luck early the last several years. Whenever anyone asks what my favorite time to be elk hunting is I tell them sept 12-24. I’ve gotten into good bugling action as early as August 30th but that’s rare for me. Mid to late September usually has good weather too.
