Hunt Update Thread

Colorado Russ had a 5x5, spike, cow and some calves pass at 80 yards.
Then he just had a cow and calf pass at 15 yards, but he passed them for today!

Isn\'t it ironic the man who made the cow with calf thread would have a cow with a calf opening day :D

GOOD JOB EVERYONE

:upthumb: we will be somewhere in central Montana still heading west by this time 2 Saturdays from now....

Took my rifle cow tag out this morning.

At first -- nothing. A nearby ranch that doesn\'t allow hunting had hundreds.

But then by buddy said it: \"Elk.\"

They were working back from hayfields and are bedded in some thick stuff. Though we were able to close to about 300 yards, they had worked into cover. The wind was blowing from us to them.

Backed out, and I\'ll be back tonight!

Hey everyone. Made to camp with no problems. Pretty wet when we got here also. Good sign around and had a 4/3 at 5 yards at 6:30 but he winded me. Then the fun started. Had a another 4/3 about a 100 yards from me and I could here other elk moving and finally saw one a nice 5/5. Was watching him with the binos and saw movement above him and there was the biggest 6/6 that I have seen in this area. They were heading up to bed so I know where I will be this evening. Still sitting up buy some water right now. Have had them come through here as late as ten o\'clock in the morning. Good to be in the mountains again. :D

Long time Lurker, first time poster. Love this web site. I hunt 1st rifle with my family in Colorado. Been hunting the same place since 1991. We are in it for the meat not the horns (horn are a bonus) but I love elk hunting. Its my #1 passion. Even though we have been hunting the same area with great success for over 20 years I still love to study and find new things. But I regress, just wanted to hop on and say this is the best thread! Along, with the meat pole. This time of year I live vicariously through your archery hunting stories. So keep em coming and I look forward to the pictures and success stories!

Welcome Anthony!
We are very pleased to have you here. :upthumb:

Good luck to you this year.

John and francis,
Good luck!

Nada for morning hunt. Lack of fresh sign weird. I stayed low which was a mistake. However, 3 locals went high and only saw 1-3 day old sign. One person glassed above timberline starting before sunrise. He saw nothing. Weird opening day if no one is seeing any elk.

cnelk said they saw 5 this morning but no shots. taking a break in the heat then will be back at it.

Ditto on break from heat. Having a glass of iced tea/lemonade after lunch. Exciting morning as Dan mentioned they just went left instead of right.

Told myself I wouldn\'t shoot a cow with a calf this early in season. Good way to have them walk 15 yards broadside!!

Best of luck, be safe , have fun!

geez, first morning in the books and no elk pics. am i gonna have to come out there :haha:

Just got out of a hail storm a bit ago and immediately glasses up a group of cows and calves. We made a long stalk and cut them off at 55 yards. My partner shot for 45. :^(

First bto kill in the books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like hearing that from a teammate!!! And if you took it opening day, I\'m taking a guess that it has to be a decent bull. Congrats man, can\'t wait to hear the story!
