Hunt Update Thread

Had to go ease in and look. At least I made a good decision to go to end of property and work back to where I last saw him. If alive and bumped, he\'ll stay on our side of the river.

Alive and bumped from his bed in first spot I looked. He wasn\'t crashing through the willows either more if a walk. Too thick to hunt so backed out. His bed had blood but not a lot. Seems to be a little from both side. Flies already on the blood.

Look again in 5 hours?
Hunt cow tonight and look at first light tomorrow?
I don\'t think he will be up and walking around tonight for another possible shot from stand.

That\'s tough Russ. With how hot it is, I would also be worried about meat spoilage like you mentioned earlier. So the blood trail took you to some willows that were too thick to really see anything? If so, any way to glass or walk the edges of the willows to see if he went through them?
 
Hard to argue with that. If he was going to die early, he\'d have done it. If he\'s going to die now, figure 8 hours+. If that\'s the case, give him 16.
 
Decided to go look for him around 7 instead of hunting for a cow. Not in the mood to shoot at anything right now except that bull.

He\'s still alive so would the meat be okay or will adrenaline bugger it up?
 
russ you will get alot of diff answers to that. if he is gut shot, which i dont think so i think its liver, then the meat might have a flavor, if its liver i think the meat will be fine. thats just my opinion.
 
We are back out on stands.
Not sure for how long as it looks like big rain is coming.

I\'m guessing liver too. That\'s a fatal shot, just takes awhile. No experience on elk just WTs I would speculate meat is gonna be fine. I hope you find him.

Most of my experience is with whitetails but should be close to the same with elk.

The bubbles I can see in the pic are to big for lung. Lung bubbles will be tiny and the should be a bunch.

Was there any dark blood almost maroon colored indicative of a liver hit? A liver will usually not stop bleeding.

Did the arrow have any smell to it?
Did the elk hunch up after the shot?
Check near any bodies of water or streams also
 
Looked at the pics again. Blood looks kind of frothy like lung? Was the bull perfectly broadside?
Thinking maybe 1 lung and liver shot.
 
Shot was quartering to me. Arrow didn\'t smell. Blood was very dark red on vanes but lighter colored in one pool with bubbles. Where he was bedded last had a couple of small pools of dark colored blood.

He didn\'t hunch up but took a few quick steps off the trail then slowed to a very slow walk and bedded within 5 mins of the shot.

Storm a brewing so hope it goes on so I can start my search again. Its all river bottom and he has a fence on one side I don\'t think he wants to jump and river on other side he likely doesn\'t want to cross. Willows are so thick I don\'t know if I can get through them but gonna find out!

Not giving up hope and got somebody close by to help if I find him.
 
great attitude russ. i think its a one lung and liver shot with him quartering to you. very hard to get two lungs with that angle. one lungers can live a long time, liver should do him in though.
