Hunt Update Thread

It was a tough packing job, too!

I feel like I should apologize at this point.

To say it was a \"quick hunt\" is understatement.

I stopped along the road to glass the hay fields, and all I could see from there was a portion of them. Nothing.

I got back in the pickup and pulled onto the road and saw an older gentleman driving the opposite way. He had just driven past the rest of the ranch, and he had a smile on his face. Or was it a smirk? No, I think he was laughing.

I rounded the corner in another 100 yards and saw a dozen elk, grazing along a willow-lined creek. I drove past, around a hill, and started the stalk. About 250 yards later, I put the shooting sticks up and picked out a nice cow.

There is a real \"hunt\" planned for two weeks from now, but this was a great freezer-filler! The pressure is off, and I\'m suddenly finding myself thinking about holding out for a little bigger bull this year.

The nice thing about tonight was that I was shooting my Dad\'s rifle. He died last fall, and had won the rifle in a raffle. He had never shot it.It\'s a little Ruger M77 Compact in .308. I\'ve found that it\'s a fine shooter, and I plan on working up some handloads this winter, but this was a Federal load. I really enjoy the rifle ... I\'m not really a gun-guy, but this compact little rifle is a hoot, and a pleasure to carry. I plan on using it for deer in Nebraska in November, and I think my son will hunt pronghorn with it, too.

Congrats Deertick & GREAT story ~ especially that it was Dad\'s rifle. Sorry for your loss, but I\'m sure he was there with you.

Colorado Russ ~ any updates....the suspense is killing me!

I\'m finally at 10 days until departure ~ single digits tomorrow!!!

Opening weekend was \'good\'.
It was WAAY too hot and dry.
We saw a total of 10 elk, and my stand \'Grassy Knoll\' saw 8 of those.

Elk were not bugling, or responding to calls.

It was good to get the kinks out, see what worked and what didnt.
I will be heading up for the long weekend on Thursday again.
Hopefully it will cool off

Congrats, John! Nice start for the Season.

Russ...been following your progress...I\'m still hopeful you\'ll find him. :angle:

So, Russ ... how goes it? I\'ll be optimistic and assume you are battling flies and a tangle of willows while breaking down your bull, and so you don\'t have time to post.

Let\'s hope that\'s the case :upthumb:

The quick and dirty of it:

Saturday night I shot at a big 5 at 33 yards, except he was at 38.

My old bow is not a flat shooter.

Sorry to hear that Ryan. Keep after them!
