Hunt Update Thread

Jason, I appreciate your input and correct in that I didn\'t just shoot, see some blood, track 20 minutes then get back in the stand. However, I feel this situation warranted signing my bull tag which is what I did and left with the ranch hand. If the bull is found dead, I\'ll get the horns and he can retrieve legally this way.

I\'ll go back for cows and redeem myself this coming weekend.
 
Tough call, Russ. Whether you signed your tag or not, you made a decision about a moral question, and that\'s admirable. Struggle with it, or decide one way or the other ... what I think people are saying is that we\'re just fed up with people who don\'t either \"struggle\" or \"decide\" but just shrug their shoulders and move on.

Good job!

Now, on to that cow. There\'s a lot of hunting left this year.

Any news from others yet?
 
Dan sent me a text this morning at 4:52am and he was getting ready do some locator bugles.

I admire your decision. I\'ve seen a lot of deer hunters around here never consider that option. I\'ve even found their bucks for them a few days later, they are happy to have the horns and still have their tags. The fact that you contemplated the consequences of your actions attests to your character. That\'s admirable and a tough decision to make for some. Everyone has their opinion but in the end you have to answer to yourself. A fine display of integrity sir, I\'m not sure what I would have done but should I be faced with a similar situation I\'ll reflect on your actions.
 
Question:

If you go fishing and hook into a fish, reel it up to the boat and it gets off, do you count it toward your daily limit?
 
No love for our crew yet. I left yesterday to drive back. Had to be at work today. Opening Saturday afternoon I had a cow at 15 yards but the shot wasn\'t ideal and I was pretty sure she would walk just a bit more out of the brush giving me a clear shot. Something spooked her and the show was over for that one. Swede, Stringunner and his dad and bro are still out there. They are putting in some serious effort so I\'m expecting to hear about a brown down any moment. No bugles yet.

I\'m on Brad\'s side here BUT if the critters is found sometime later my tags goes on it or whatever is saved from it .... :think: :think:

Like some have said there is no right answer to this situation but there are several wrong answers to it ....
 
We\'ve had a tough season so far, with not many sightings. TONS of bear sign. I saw a sow and two cubs yesterday at about 40 yards.

The bulls are pretty quiet. I\'ve not heard a bugle yet. My buddies heard a couple yesterday though.

Our area got about 2x the normal rain this summer, so grass is thick. It seems like they aren\'t moving that much. Most of our sightings are around 10-10.5k feet.

Hope to have better news soon, though. Today is a 1/2 day for us, trying to recharge. we normally hunt last week of the season, which provides shorter days, which my body would appreciate. This first week is alot tougher on the carcass, between the heat and longer days.

Dismal opening week for me. I am out every morning and evening. It has been very warm

2 wallows had recent activity. My friend\'s out of town friends will sit there tonight and tomorrow.

Some hunters have left to go to another OTC.

Even deer hunting is slow going.

Yesterday morning while I was out hunting, my friend stopped at my campsite at 9 am. At 9:06am, he sees a 4x4 bull standing 25 yards back behind my tent and behind a long row of large deadfall. The game are well shielded from the road by a number of large deadfall. I already knew the deer and elk pass behind my campsite daily. I hold that location for hunting when I am sick or wornout a bit. I tried it this morning and saw nothing. I can\'t see the entire area without having my scent go in the wrong direction.

While doing laundry, I ran into the game warden for the adjacent limited license units. He said Archery hunters there are only scouting. They aren\'t even bothering to carry their bows. He reported those units are seeing same little activity and elk sightings as my unit. He also reported a lot of Spring deer deaths because of the late snows.

So far, I tried 75% ambush and 25% cold calling. Last year, I did 90% cold calling and 10% ambush. The young bulls appear to be getting antsy for some company. Starting tonight, going back to infrequent light cold calling.

I have 5 more days for this trip.

I\'m leaving at the end of next week, and the forecast at this point is the same...warm and clear. Getting at least a few afternoon thundershowers really helps the elk get \"back in the groove\" after a warm spell...so I\'m hoping for that kind of change. Otherwise, it may be a repeat performance of last Season, with sparse bugling just before and after daylight.

Fortunately, I know where the elk have always been...I hope history doesn\'t decide to change this Season! :angle:

In 10 days we are knocking on mid September.
The rut will happen as the calves need to be born mid May next spring.
The weather wil cool down and the Bulls will bugle.

All this will be when we are in the back country of Wyoming. :)
 
Fresh lion kills near a lot of our sweet action/camera spots..... no wonder all the elk disappeared a few days before we showed up and are still gone. Starting the search all over again!
 
Brad, the fishing comparison is apples to oranges unless you are saying the fish swallowed the hook and blood coming from its gills THEN decide to keep or release. I\'ve kept small trout that swallowed my hook whereas I wouldn\'t have otherwise.

Appreciate all of the comments kept to the context of my situation. Everyone can make their own decision that allows them to be at peace with the given situation.
 
I adjusted my schedule and will be heading back up at 0300am and be in the stand by 6am.
Aaron Johnson and I will hook up Friday mid-morning.
My son finalized his schedule today and he will be joining us Friday afternoon.

Here we come....
 
Nothing yet from Swedes camp. Swede had a buck come inyesterday but not shot and a cougar walked in this morning but no shot. I miss ranged a buck this morning and shaved his belly, had hair all over my broadhead but no blood. Still no elk. Cold weather and rain tonight is hampering the tree stand hunting. Came home tonight to do laundry and regroup. Heading back in the morning. Nothing from Dad tonight and don\'t no if Swede saw anything tonight. Checking all cams again in the morning and hunting hard till Monday. Hopefully it happens for one of us.
