Insulation layer

I was wondering what guys are using for a "warmth" or insulation layer. I currently just use a cabelas pull over fleece but am looking at upgrading to a first lite uncompahdre or kuiu Teton insulated jacket. Anybody have any preference or maybe I'm over thinking it?

I prefer using a Merino long sleeve under shirt and then a lightweight "puffy" coat for warmth.  I'lll also throw on a lightweight rain coat if needed
