I'll be going on a new high elev hunt in sept. First time in this area and hope to have good results.
My season here is still going though, I've still got some tags and plenty of freezer room 8) 8)
DTP said:Good luck! Have you been submitting for the elusive Gila tags?
backcountry_hunter said:Yes and I've been using all three of my preferences (1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice) for it. I don't as much care about when and what I go with, as I just want to go!
I love and hate NM's draw system. I love that I could draw any year regardless of points, but I hate it due to the planning part of things. I always submit other apps and plan other trips HOPING I need to cancel because I drew a tag in the Gila for Sept.
I have buddies that put in for other less desireable units in the lower price category that have had similar luck drawing. Non-res DIY guys get the table scraps in that state....

I know a lot of guys who are residents and they havent drawn in years....
They are also the ones who apps are 16D rifle, 16D rifle, 16A rifle.....
I've drawn the last few years, but I have a very "balanced" application.
My draw odds are typically 11%, 28%, 30% as far as the units I put in for.
I hope you draw this year! I love watching people go shoot monsters in the Gila. :upthumb:

backcountry_hunter said:what I don't understand is how my 2nd and 3rd choices "rank" in comparison to my 1st. Maybe you can help.... for example (and sake of argument) lets say unit 16A has 2 archery seasons, a Muzzle loader and however many rifle. If my odds on the 2nd archery season are <10% but odds with muzzle are somewhere around 20% and odds with rifle are 30% (all these are pretty ficticious figures but don't get hung up on that, just the concept). So I want to hunt 16A and 16A only, so I put down the archery as my 1st choice. Are my odds for the other 2 hunts pretty much negated because there hundreds (or thousands) that have those hunts down as 1st while they're my 2nd & 3rd?
I guess a better way to look at it is, because I have these hunts down as 2nd and 3rd, do the guys with the same hunt in mind that apply with it as 1st choice get it over me or do they just pull my number and if the 1st choice is booked they go to 2nd and then 3rd?

Know where you're headed? I've been to ND dozens of times, in almost every corner of that state chasing waterfowl. I'll help/insight if you've got any questions.
