Is anyone planning something new for 2018?

Has anyone already started their prep for 2018?
I know I have!

My 2018 plan will be New Mexico as a primary (if I draw) with Idaho general areas as a backup! I cannot wait!

Yeah, the preparation is fully under way for me. New area for 2018 for sure. Might even sneak a scouting trip in within the next month or so, depending on the weather.

Planning the same unit and area since my trip was cut short. Also got some new areas I?m going to checkout as well. But who knows might end up somewhere else all together. Not looking forward to the wait.

New Mexico is always a pipe dream, maybe I'll finally draw.

I'll be going on a new high elev hunt in sept. First time in this area and hope to have good results.

My season here is still going though, I've still got some tags and plenty of freezer room  8) 8)

Good luck! Have you been submitting for the elusive Gila tags?

Yes and I've been using all three of my preferences (1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice) for it. I don't as much care about when and what I go with, as I just want to go!

I love and hate NM's draw system. I love that I could draw any year regardless of points, but I hate it due to the planning part of things. I always submit other apps and plan other trips HOPING I need to cancel because I drew a tag in the Gila for Sept.

I have buddies that put in for other less desireable units in the lower price category that have had similar luck drawing. Non-res DIY guys get the table scraps in that state....

Residents are with you! They love and hate it!
I know a lot of guys who are residents and they havent drawn in years....
They are also the ones who apps are 16D rifle, 16D rifle, 16A rifle.....

I've drawn the last few years, but I have a very "balanced" application.
My draw odds are typically 11%, 28%, 30% as far as the units I put in for.

I hope you draw this year! I love watching people go shoot monsters in the Gila.  :upthumb:

Wyoming early(general tag in GB country with 2 others) and New Mexico late next September. I'll have 7 days at work and 9 days at home that month. Convinced the work boss to let me keep my job and the wife boss to let me go, though she wants to go on the NM hunt which is a good thing.

Sounds like a great month!  :upthumb:

I'm just looking forward to this season.... :upthumb: :upthumb: :upthumb:

Every time I make extended plans all kinda crap seems to happens to end them... :downthumb: :downthumb: :downthumb:

I do have on the back burner a "bucket list" duck, goose and pheasant hunt to North Dakota... :shh: :shh:

what I don't understand is how my 2nd and 3rd choices "rank" in comparison to my 1st. Maybe you can help.... for example (and sake of argument) lets say unit 16A has 2 archery seasons, a Muzzle loader and however many rifle. If my odds on the 2nd archery season are <10% but odds with muzzle are somewhere around 20% and odds with rifle are 30% (all these are pretty ficticious figures but don't get hung up on that, just the concept). So I want to hunt 16A and 16A only, so I put down the archery as my 1st choice. Are my odds for the other 2 hunts pretty much negated because there hundreds (or thousands) that have those hunts down as 1st while they're my 2nd & 3rd?

I guess a better way to look at it is, because I have these hunts down as 2nd and 3rd, do the guys with the same hunt in mind that apply with it as 1st choice get it over me or do they just pull my number and if the 1st choice is booked they go to 2nd and then 3rd?

Know where you're headed? I've been to ND dozens of times, in almost every corner of that state chasing waterfowl. I'll help/insight if you've got any questions.

At the end of the day the best thing that can happen is to be lucky and drawn at the front of the pack.
The reason you want to line the percents up correctly is to keep you in the game longer. It's not much longer, but you still have a shot. Also to give you the optimal shot at drawing your most desired hunt.

Let me see if I can make this clear as mud with examples lol.

Im going to use second season archery hunts in 3 different units.
16A, 6C, 52.
So in the draw pool NR get 6% of the tags.

16A has 60 tags, 6C has 108, 52 has 230.
So rough math: 6%: 16A: 3.6 tags , 6C: 6.48 tags, 52: 13.8 tags
Lets just say 4, 7, and 14.

For the sake of this example: 16A is the best, 6C is meh, and 52 is garbage, but you know it has a good draw percent for NR.

So you always want to start with your lowest draw odds and taper off to highest and here is why.

Lets say you are drawn beginning of the pack.
Your app is: 16A, 6C, 52.
Your name is drawn and they go down the line. 16A is no filled, boom you get it. If it's filled, on to 6C. 6C is not filled, you get it. If it is then it's on to 52. If that's filled then you are bypassed.

Now lets do this a different way.
52, 16A, 6C.

Your names is drawn, 52 is not filled, boom you draw 52. Now you just drew your first NM tag ever for the hypothetical garbage unit.
Based off statistics it's probable that with that order, you're basically flushing 16A and 6C out as chances. Of course anything could happen, but the chances of the first 52 NR being drawn had 52 as a first and then you're drawn and get 16A.... I think you know what I mean.

So to circle back, the reason for the ranking and order is to keep you in the game longer, if any. When people are doing stuff like 16A, 16A, 16D it's almost a wash.
Everything will be single digit super hard to draw, etc.
That's why you want to luck out and luck out with an early selection.

I've got a friend from SC that's hunted with us for years that goes somewhere in the area of Dawson almost every year and if I do get to go it will be my wife and me (maybe my oldest son) with him and his wife... He and his wife are about the same age as my oldest son... Plus she's an RN with yes of cardiac experience...

Yes!! Starting to plan out archery. Looking at Montana,Wyoming and Colorado. I hunted Colorado for 3rd rifle about 8yrs ago, what a cluster of people!! So now that vacation time and financial is getting in place I can start to plan before age gets the best of me.

Oh yeah. Already planning 2018. First time with archery equipment in Wyoming on a general tag if we draw.... September hunt... if we don't draw, then its Colorado with archery or potentially a 4th season rifle hunt. Still debating that one. Then the normal OTC hunts in Utah hopefully ending with a late season cow tag in the snow!  Let the waiting game begin....
