Just finished up putting the last coat of polyurethane on my newest knife. Pretty happy with the way this one came out. This go round I did have access to a band sander, which helped out a ton!

I did this one a little different than my first one. Instead of getting the handles perfectly shaped before installing them, this time I got them close and glued them, then did the final sanding. Although it made it easier to get the pins aligned perfectly, I didn?t really like sanding the handles while they were on the knife because inevitably I was going to hit some of the stainless steel with the sandpaper.

Here?s a link to my first knife that I put together with a full-on write up: https://www.elk101.com/forums/index.php/topic,7531.0.html

Here's a link to the knife kit and the scales I used:

If anyone has had an itch to try this, I can't recommend it enough. The knives are great and hold an awesome edge. My first knife has been used on a bunch of animals already and it's amazing how long it stays sharp. I'm very impressed!

Looks good Derek!  I did one of their folding knives and like you mentioned I scratched the stainless finish when sanding so ended up keeping instead of giving to someone.  I need to try again.

You're right in the blades have a great edge!

If you want to dabble in something else, they have bottle opener kits and I've made several of these for friends.

Cool Derek! I have 4 completed ones. one with oak scales, one with canvas micarta, and one with mesquite. The 4th one is already sold. And I just completed 3 more blade blanks yesterday. Not sure just what kind of handles I'll be doing on the new blanks. I'm doing everything from scratch. Great hobby :-D

That's awesome Bill! How difficult is it to make the blade blanks? I've thought about trying to do everything from scratch like that, but honestly have no clue where to start.

Derek: PM me with your email address and I'll give you a few tips. It's easier than you think.
