Making Coffee In Camp

Wanted to see if anyone has a tip or trick for making coffee in a quicker fashion while in camp. We've done it with percolators and we've also tried the Coleman coffee maker that sits on the propane stove, but neither one is a very quick option. Every year while sitting around waiting for the coffee to finish, I feel like there's got to be a better way. It just seems like such a waste of time! Any ideas on speeding up the process?

Are you going for Caffeine or something warm in the morning? If just caffeine I'd suggest making a cold brew before and just drinking in the morning.

For heating it up faster I don't have anything for you, I use a teapot and a french press in the truck camper and it doesn't seem to take too long, when backpacking I just drink powders from Mtn Ops etc.

I do it with a jetboil with the coffee press lid. Takes about 2 minutes to boil add the grounds and then 6 minutes before it?s ready to press and pour.

I do it about 2 times a year and lucky for me those times are coming up soon!

Bring a thermos. Thats what I do.


I make coffee in the evening, temper the thermos and then add the hot coffee.
Wrap the thermos in something to keep it insulated overnight.


Pour yourself a hot cup without getting out of the sleeping bag.

Water in jetboil/pot. Turn on stove. Use time while water is heating, to:  fix something to eat/pour coffee packet in cup / pack camp / morning pee.

Pour water, stir, savor and eat breakfast.

I make "cowboy coffee". Dump coffee grounds in the pot with water and use a jet boil. Let it come to a full boil, which is only a couple of minutes. Then remove from heat and give it a shot of cold water. It will make the grounds settle to the bottom and you get a pretty clean cup of coffee.

Typically both. Warm is nice, especially during rifle season. Not as important during archery.

Now that's an idea...I might have to try that.


I should mention that I'm not just making coffee for myself, it's our whole camp. So typically a full percolator or a full pot of coffee. So a jetboil or anything like that probably isn't going to do the trick.

A regular thermos holds about 4-5 cups of coffee.
Not sure how many cups each guy will drink but 2 thermoses is quite a bit of Joe.


A heavy wool sock works good as a thermos insulator.




I do this a lot when I go ice fishing on my snowmobiles.

This won't make 4-5 cups at a time, but I took an AeroPress out a few years ago and it was awesome. I got hooked on ultra-strong black coffee in the process. It helped as a moral booster on those cold, slow days.

The following year, I took the JetBoil and used the coffee press that came with it. A few grounds found their way into the cup here and there, but overall this was much more efficient than using the AeroPress. I'll be using this method again this year. If I were you I'd tell those other chumps to get their own dang cup of coffee.  :crazy:

I put my percolator on my wood burning stove the night before, then the next morning I push it next to my flue pipe and it is boiling in less than ten minutes. Fill up my thermos and out of the wall tent I go. The benefits of hardwood and coal for fuel.

CNELK, the thermos was my plan for this year. Make it before bed and put it in a good thermos. I wonder if you had some of that insulating foil to wrap around it, if it would be better. I'm thinking with just the thermos it would still be warm in the morning.

The key is to temper the thermos before adding the coffee.


Here?s how I temper a thermos:


1- full thermos with water
2- dump water from thermos into kettle and heat to boiling
3- fill thermos with boiling water and put cap on loose
4- make coffee
5- put hot water from thermos into another kettle and save for future coffee
6- immediately pour hot coffee into tempered thermos
7- replace thermos cap but not too tight as it will tighten with the tempered thermos


You will definitely have very hot coffee the next morning, especially if you put thermos in a wool sock or wrap in in coat overnight.

We have sped it up at our basecamp 2 ways.

1 - Use a French press and boiled water

2 - We bring in a generator to run the freezers a couple hours a day. Plus a few of us need cpap machines so we are forever charging batteries. Last year we just brought the Keurig up with us too

Hey Nancy, get up earlier.  I use a stove top percolator and set it up the night before.  First one up turns on the stove and in 20 minutes it's done.  It usually takes us ol' farts at least 20 minutes to get dressed, organize gear, brush teeth, and other necessary stuff.
