Naps

I\'m a BIG FAN of an afternoon siesta (but not in treestands), but I\'m starting to feel a little guilty reading some threads from the \"hardcore hunters.\" Who\'s got an opinion on catching some z\'s on the mountain or back in camp? I would never leave any elk action of course, but are naps justifiable?

I can count the number of naps I\'ve taken as an adult on one hand. I know some people are big into napping but I\'ve never been one of those people. I am on the go all the time...even when I\'m \"relaxing\", I\'m doing something.

I don\'t foresee us napping while we are hunting either. Sure, we may sit down for a snack to give the legs a break but I won\'t sleep.

I try to take advantage of a nap if the opportunity presents itself. If my plans for the day have me back in camp for lunch, I will try to squeeze in a few minutes of shut eye. I have never taken a nap on the mountain though. When I am hunting, I am hunting. But the occasional nap can definitley help power through the rest of the day and make waking up bright and early a little easier.

An afternoon nap on the edge of a meadow on a hot, sunny day while you\'re waiting for the temps to drop and the elk to get moving is one of the finer things in life.

Did someone say \'nap\'?
I will take a 2 minute nap if I can.
I dont need a long nap but a little rest can be very rewarding when chasing elk.

This is how we rest, one guy rests, the other guy listens and watches

[thats me resting :) ]

Yesss !!

I always like to take a nap in the afternoon back in camp.
We mainly hunt mornings and later in the afternoon.
Since I work midnights it normally will take me several days to get my internal clock adjusted.
Back in camp it\'s target practice, shower, lunch, and nap.

Is that Herb?

I think the way we hunt, the condition we are in when we arrive, and the amount of time we will be hunting all are considerations when thinking about a nap during the day. I consider noon to 3:00 PM to be less productive for me than in the morning and late afternoon and evening. If I am only hunting for a weekend then I will maximize every minute I have available to hunt. I will try to arrive for my hunt well rested, so a night or two with short sleep hours is no big deal. If I am hunting for a longer time, then I need to recharge the batteries so to speak. I either sleep longer at night or take a nap in the afternoon.
I am not advocating anything here, but I will snooze in some of my larger tree stands. Snoozing is not sleeping. I am aware of my surroundings and look around regularly. In my Millennium M100 I have a large safe seat and platform. I have a full body harness that will allow me to drop only about 2 inches when I am seated. With my harness on I am going nowhere. The estimated 2 inch potential drop it what I believe is potentially there from applying all of my weight to the tether and harness, otherwise it is fairly snug when I am seated.

@ Colorado_Lew

No. Thats another guy I used to hunt with.
That is until he took others into some of our good spots. :mg:

I may nap, briefly, but it depends on the day.

A warm, windless spot at mid-day can be inviting. I\'ve found that 10-15 minutes can really rejuvenate me.

I like to take a ten to fifteen minute snooze in the woods. It\'s definitely a pleasure in my life. Recharge and hit it hard for the afternoon and evening.

I\'m a great afternoon napper. A few years ago, something woke me up blowing out thru the oak brush real close. Never saw a hair of what it was & figured my buddy setting across the meadow probably could tell me what it was...wrong.... Seems as tho he nodded off as well.

Trust me, I would dearly love to take a nap every once in awhile. But to be honest about it, I can\'t ever remember actually falling asleep. Seems like just about the time I\'m really getting into it, a fly buzzes me or an ant tries to crawl up my pant leg. But that doesn\'t stop me from TRYING to catch a mid-day siesta !

Lark, give yourself about 10 to 15 years and your answer to this question might be a little different. Quite a few years ago my Dad would fall asleep in his chair and I\'d wonder how he could do that. Now I know!

One year I had just settled in under a nice pine and started to doze off.
For some reason I awoke and opened my eyes to find a small black bear sniffing my ruck sack that was at my feet.
I jumped up, the bear went one way and I the other. That was the last time that I tried to snooze in the woods when alone!

The only better nap I can think of is one that turns a 20 hr ride home into a 10 hr ride. Even on the way out to CO I try to stay up late the night before so I can sleep early in the drive schedule and drive late night or early morning. One of the greatest parts of the trip is having the sun come up behind you hitting the mountains in front of you. I\'m like a kid on Christmas morning :D
