New cooler ordered

Okay, I broke down and ordered me an RTIC 65 quart cooler for my birthday. It\'ll be a belated present as they\'re about 6-8 weeks out on delivery. I had a hard time pulling the trigger on a $200 cooler but wasn\'t no way I could ever justify $400 for same size Yeti(unless maybe I got $400 for my birthday instead of $200)!

Anxious to do my own Ice Test. Also bought a Coleman 62 qt Xtreme from BPS for $70 since I needed something before hunting season.

I\'ve got several older coolers that will be going to Craigslist, garage sale or thrift store!

Nice Russ! I hadn\'t heard of the RTIC ones before, they look pretty nice though. A little competition in the cooler industry would definitely be a good thing. The prices some of those companies want is absurd!
 
I just looked at the cooler we bought for our Colorado trip in 2005... I just about had another heart attack... :ill: :ill:

We paid $45 each back then and the are closer to $150 each now.... :eek: :eek:

I hope those we bought back in 2005 don\'t tear up soon since we\'ve been using them for deer since then... :D :D
 
I don\'t have one of Rtics coolers but I did by one of their stainless tumblers like the Yeti but half the price. It has kept my drinks cold and held ice really well. Even in the hot NM sun. I\'ve been thinking about getting one of their bigger coolers as well. Interested to hear your opinion once you receive it.
 
Will be curios on your Ice test as I was looking at them also but could not get myself to spent more than the 70 for the Coleman.

Seems like there is lots of Roto Molded cooler companies popping up all over as I have seen a handful of other companies as well.
 
I agree Don - I was looking at Pelican, Etsy, and one other I can\'t recall. All very similar. I believe RTIC was sued initially by YETI but changed one minor thing and no issues now.

My wife bought me a YETI tumbler before I knew about the RTIC ones. It does work very well but twice as expensive. Going to look at the RTIC thermos now for Christmas!

Dan - works for me since I won\'t get it before CO archery season is over!!
 
Elky, just checked and order now to be shipped October 24th(about 7-8 weeks out).

I was in a Big R store this weekend and they\'ve got a version now too - Valley Coolers. Roto Molded. 50 liter/52 qt - $200. 75l/79 qt - $230. 100l/105 qt - $270. I like that they go bigger than the 65 qt RTIC but don\'t underestimate the weight of these things. I\'m not sure if I grabbed the 50l or 75l but it was probably 30 lbs EMPTY! The 100 liter one would likely need 2 people once loaded.

Did use my new Coleman last weekend and it wasn\'t bad. I use ice packs for my food and a couple still had frozen spots after 2 days. Granted, the cooler stayed in the back seat of my pickup and temps never got above 80. Not a real good test scenario but better than my older coolers.

Now, to get 3-4 coolers on Craigslist or Letgo before I get the new one.
 
yea. my brother bought a Engel and Grizzly, my buddy bought a YETI. to be honest, my IGLOO kept ice the same duration. maybe a scooch better (but i cheated..i froze everything and even put frozen gallons in the igloo prior to loading and driving to IDAHO..i knew there would be cash bets going on :)) so we had 3 of the high-ends and my one cheapo at elk camp.

BUT!! i broke both hinges and the latch on the packing for home. hahahhaha..that there is the achilles heel of the igloo. the plastic hardware. i\'m not sure we can even legally call it \"hard\"ware.
 
So, we gotta keep an eye on you is what you\'re saying!

I\'ve got 2 of the 150 qt white igloo coolers too. They\'re great when you can pack them pretty full. I\'ve got pics somewhere of one with about 80 lbs of ice plus 2 hogs quartered up and it was heavy but the handles and hinges held up well. I think one of the best uses is to pack with clothes and such and anything you don\'t necessarily want smashed. Use it like that until you get an elk down and unload. The 150 qt will hold a LOT of elk if deboned.
 
Quick update on the new Coleman. It performed much better than my older Coleman did the weekend before. Temps were similar and coolers stayed in the backseat. Put 10 lb bag of ice in cooler and very little, if anything else(few beers). After 2 full days, older cooler was down to very little ice but newer one still had enough ice for a couple glasses of tea.

Honestly, not a huge difference. But, the newer cooler is much more sturdy built and wheels are bigger(no need for a lift kit)!

One item to note for the tumblers regardless of brand. All keep contents hot and/or cold. However, the outside will still be cold! I wanted a hot tumbler against my cold hands in the morning but alas it wasn\'t to be. Tea did stay hot for about 2 hours in the treestand!

if i was a guide,or a pro fisherman..or heck a full time heavy construction field engineer, i might buy a YETI level ice chest. BUT..BIG BUT, i think my chest stay in my garage 11 months out of the year. the math just doenst pan out for a highend chest. sad but true.

now do i want one? yes!! i like that Sportsman PRO line from SAMS CLUB. about the magnitude of RTIC in $$..might be all i can afford.

the downside of the highend chest is the weight. you load up an elk into my brothers huge Grizzly, it had better be in the back of the truck. you are not picking it up. it\'s heavy empty.
 
I just ordered the 100 and 60 qts from cabelas because they were having the 20% off cabelas name brand stuff. These are nice!

X-2 what cliff said. A $65 dollar Igloo from Sam\'s is plenty good for me. So what if the henges break. What do you think they made duck tape for? LOL! Those rubber latches on a Yeti will dry rot and break given time.
 
I forget what we paid for our 150 qt ice chests from Wally World but we\'ve had them and used them since the late 90\'s and we can keep skinned and quartered deer for a week at a time easy....
 
Yesterday afternoon when my daughter in law came to pick up my oldest grand son our conversation somehow got to Yeti coolers...

They have a couple but the box type they have is a 45 or 50 and my oldest son got it for $100... One of his friends at work won it as a door prize at some event and it had advertising on it so the friend didn\'t want it... Don\'t know what kind of ad was on it but my oldest son told him he\'d give him $100 right then if he wanted to get rid of it... So that\'s how they got their 1st Yeti cool... The other was a Christmas present and was a large soft side with zipper top which we used during the early teal season...
 
About ready for a test - not real hot here so might take both coolers to Oklahoma in 2 weeks. Actually, 3 coolers. I\'ve also got a 150 qt Igloo that I want to toss into the mix. My other 2 are 65 qt so need 2.3 times the ice in the 150 qt cooler.

One 150 qt I got new at Sam\'s for around $70 and the other 150 qt was nearly new on Craigslist for $60.

Thoughts are to put 10 lbs of ice in the 65 qt then 23 lbs in the 150 qt. Sit 4 cans of beverage in each cooler not touching the ice. Shut coolers for 3 days then pull out 1 beverage from each cooler. Open all 3 and check temperature - curious if any difference since generally only mention ice retention. Figure every 2-3 days take out another beverage, check, repeat until no more ice.

Any other suggestions for a \'side by side\' type comparison?

I\'d like to add Dan\'s new Cabela\'s coolers but our diff in temps would skew the results.
 
My daughter in law told me 3 days for ice with their box type Yeti with outside temps running in the high 90\'s to low 80\'s but that the water was still cold-cold... I know them and she\'s talking store bought bag of Ice which i think is around 5# to 7# here...

I know the zip top Yeti we used during teal season had very little ice with several bottles of water and my orange juice and everything I drank out of it started out cold... Outside temps were low 70\'s to mid 80\'s then...
