New Gear for 2017

I\'ve looked at those \"lobster mittens\" ... wow, not cheap. I think I\'ll try something different first. I don\'t think the trigger finger thingy really adds that much, and it makes the index finger cold. I\'m sure they\'re quality based on their maker, but I\'m going to look for a traditional mitten first.

Well apparently I needed some new broadheads. Last year I swore I\'d never look at another head after the performance of my Magnus stingers. This morning I was poking around archery talk looking for a 3 pack of stingers and I saw a thread for 8 original silver flame 125gr. XLs. I\'ve always admired them but 80 Euros per 3 pack was out of my league. I couldn\'t pass them up for less than half that. I haven\'t been as excited for a hunting related product in a while.

I was sold on the Stingers last Year too !

Gloves have always been tough for me, because I shoot with a finger tab.

Bought some wool \"Sniper gloves\" a couple Years back, they were a good solution. Like Mittens, but have a velcro catch where you can flip them back to expose your fingers on your shooting hand, and I can have the tab on underneath.

Walking in before shooting light...I\'ll opt for heavier, insulated gloves if September temps are down in the 20s...

Looking to make my own freeze dried meals this year using elk meat. Gets hard eating Mountain House day after day.

Also looking for some sort of communication with the outside world. I got quite a bit of flack for telling my loved ones I could be in any number of drainages within a 10 mile diameter, and that they shouldn\'t worry if I came back a day or two late because I could be packing out...

I\'m also planning on upgrading my entire bow setup. Bow and components are ordered. Should be in soon! Now just need to settle on arrows and fletching setup...

Delorme Inreach has always eventually been able to get my text out of those \"hellholes\"...although it might take up to 20 minutes sometimes.

I end up \"overusing\" it a little with the basic plan when I\'m out (solo) ten or twelve days, but all told, the extra text messages only run me maybe an extra 40 or 50 bucks.

Also has the nice feature that allows my Wife and Daughter to see the last location I transmitted from on the map online.

You guys ever try glomitts? It\'s what I\'ve worn for years sitting in the treestand. Just flip back the finger covers when you need to shoot. I always get the wool/thinsulate kind. Usually last me a couple seasons.

I just got some new Lowa Caminos for $210 shipped from Shoebuy.com to replace my old Mendl perfekt hikers that finally wore out. Also bought a Bowtech Experience off eBay...new in the box with warranty for $460. Finally got it set up today. Going to be looking at a new lightweight shelter, among other things, for, hopefully, an Alaska caribou hunt in 2018. I could see that spending getting completely out of hand!

Thanks, I think you\'ve sold me! They are going to love following along the map online!

The \"fun\" part of it, is reviewing your daily miles when you get back. ;)

Cliff, what pack did you end up getting?

This weekend we had a snowstorm in the forecast, so I told my wife I was going to sleep in my new Hilleberg Atko tent and Kifaru 0 degree Slick sleeping bag to test them out. She misunderstood me and said, \"I didn\'t sign up for that!\" I said no - I not we!

The Atko is the more robust (the Enan is the lighter weight single man tent), and uses 1 pole along with 4 short corner poles sewn into the fabric. Hilleberg makes great tents, with great materials, and they are not cheap, but this should last me 15 years.

The tent held up well with all the snow dumping. The wet snow would gather on the ends of the tent. Part of the reason, besides wet heavy snow, is that I didn\'t put the guy lines and an optimal angle to keep the edges taught. It got down to 28 degrees and I was hot in that bag and had to unzip it and the inner liner of the tent. It\'s a start for the testing, but everything went well.

i got the Mystery Ranch Metcalf.

my Kifaru DT1 got demoted to trout fishing pack. i just never warmed up to that thing. i havent looked at any of their new bags.

I just ordered a exo 5500 pack. I hope it lives up to the reviews, its a lot of cash to replace my old Kelty that still functions.
