New GPS or Tablet with a GPS app?

So I am trying to decide between a new GPS or Tablet. I have a Garmin Oregon 400T that I've had since 2009 that I really like. I'm looking at the Garmin Montana 600 or a 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. I want to be able to take a pic and have it saved as a waypoint. I know the Garmin will do it but not so sure about the Samsung. Would like to here if you have tried both and what are your thoughts.

Here is a thought how about a camera with a gps? nikon has a water proof freeze proof shock proof camera with a gps it also comes in camo.

I would go with the gps.  Mainly due to battery life.  There is a new garmin out with a camera.  With lithium batteries you are set for a while.

I agree with MT,  I have the Oregon 550 with the Hunt GPS card.  The camera works well and that's one less thing I have to pack. The Montana 600 is touch screen and they are very easy to use. Lithium batteries are lighter and they run quiet a bit longer.  Also the GPS is designed to play in the outdoors, the tablet however as a friend found out, not so much. He slipped on a steep bank and that thing went crunch.

Rhino 655T......everything you need.  If you happen to pack your phone with you,  you're going to get better photos for posting later.....The Rhino is built for the trail and will also let you communicate with a hunting partner if they've tot the same unit via txt or voice.  I bring both.....Pics from my phone can be uploaded instantly to various sources like Twitter and FB, along with various forums.

My concern would also be for reception.  I'm not sure if the tablet would be able to operate without connection to the operating network.  GPS units seem like they would be able to connect to satellites a bit better.  My GPS is able to find me when I know my phone can't.

You can use the just like a gps.  It's best to have wifi and then you can cache maps.  It takes up some space and if you don't use wifi and are on a data plan it can use quite a bit of that.  Once the maps are cached there is an option to run in field mode which allows the cached maps to be used without service.

Your dead on you wouldnt get wifi where i hunt you would have the maps but you would not be-able to track or do anything a gps would.

I bought a new Garmin Montana 650T. Now just need to get out and play with it. Thanks for all the info.

My name is Nick, I work for onXmaps(Hunting GPS Maps) if you have any questions feel free to ask. Looking trough everyone's answers you all have excellent suggestions. It is true the Garmin handhelds are rugged and make more sense in the field. You can use your tablet or smart phone in the field with our app, you would have to cache the maps before you go out and lose reception.

Happy hunting!

Nick
