New To Forum and Going On 1st Archery Elk Hunt

Good to have you on board Justin.

Sounds like you should have a great hunt. Ranch hands are a wealth of knowledge. Nobody knows the land better. Where we hunt now we got to know the ranch manager on a neighboring ranch. We couldn\'t hunt the ranch but he knew the public land really well from running Cattle on it. He helped us out a lot by telling us where and when they saw elk and we would tell them when we came across strays they missed during their roundup.

Greetings to all of you here at BackTrak,

I have been stalking here for a couple of weeks and am truly impressed with the great atmosphere here and all the folks willing to help. I have been on other forums in the past and this is just a much better place. The advice and friendship here is what hunting is suppose to be all about!

As mentioned in the title I am preparing to go on my first archery elk hunt. I will be hunting on a private ranch in unit 46 in NM. The ranch supposedly has a great population and a couple of large irrigated fields. I would welcome and certainly appreciate any and all advice that you guys will give a newby. I am an experienced archer that lives in TX. I have taken some 150 plus whitetail with stick and string, pigs, and even a nice pronghorn. I am just a little nervous on what skills are transferable to help me be successful in a couple of weeks. My only elk experience has been rifle hunting second season in CO on a couple of occasions. We where successful but there was a lot of snow and I expect this to be a lot different this time.

Thanks for having me here.

My Best,

JJ

I will come help you.. If I can have a tag too. :D :D :wtf: :banned:

LOL Welcome to the forum buddy :welcome:

Get in shape,
if you can have someone else to call, it will be a BIG help. Bon\'t be scared to call, some elk sound TERRIBLE at bugling. A lot depends on the terrain.

If you rely on water, try to find the trails converging to increase your odds. If they aren\'t harassed too much they won\'t be too skittish as I suspect they won\'t since they are \"land locked \" in private area, so to speak.

Hunt all day. every day.

Watch the wind,

use a range finder, elk come in different sizes and you will be thrown off by that.

watch the wind

I promise you a grown alert/nervous bull can do a ninja-double backflip jack knife get out of dodge maneuver that will leave your wondering just what the h&^%ll happened, so if he is nervous make dang sure he is close or don\'t take the shot.

They can pick up moment through brush while walking 90 degrees to you, pick your time to draw very carefully.

Early season a good bull with a harem will send a cow to check your calls out, remember they won\'t be in full rut and TOO worried about another bull before second week of September, its going to be a lot of just a shouting match (bugling) to get the cows to join them.

Im no expert by far, but i highly recommend reading my lessons learned from my first elk hunt in 2014 and it will give you some things to look forward to and some insight.

I just went back and re-read that post of yours. Hysterical, but so true!
