Open reed, external reed, bite reeds, diaphragms, etc...

That spike elk will forever be a huge hunting experience in my heart and mind.

That bull put you in the \"10% club\", Dan.

And that is definitely a great achievement, especially for a newbie to elk hunting :upthumb:

I started calling elk about 23 years ago. I was using a single reed for all cow sounds and a power bugle for bull sounds. I tend to not use the bugle near as much as I do now. I have called in some competitions and done well. My calling and hunting technique has evolved over the years to what I do now, run and gun and I use diaphragm reeds for everything and a grunt tube. I bugle a lot when hunting to locate vocal elk. I choose to use a double reed for all my sounds as I am more versatile with the tone, pitch and intensity. I do call most of the year to improve as much as possible. I will use several different reeds while hunting some elk just like certain pitches more than others. I rarely hunt the same area year to year and it does not affect our success rates at all. I try to go after only mature bulls for the area and If I had to put a score on them to shoot it would have to be at least 300?. I have hunted several different states and the elk react the same in all of them all public land. I have been fortunate to call with some of the best in the world and have learned a tremendous amount from them. I have used every manufacture available to me at one point or another and have settled in with Glacier Country Hunting Calls, I have chosen them due to the realistic tones, versatility of each and every one of them. The only time I will switch reeds in the field is if I know the elk can hear me and they do not respond then I will try a different reed and a large percentage of the time they will answer. It could be the pitch or they just think there are several bulls around. The most enjoyment I get is helping others to achieve success. I would rather call in a bull for someone than shoot one myself.

Who uses a loud cow call for \'contact\' bugles?

I have Brad, with marginal success. At this point I use it as a last call when locating or contact bugle some call it.

I use a single latex reed and a bugle tube.
The reed I use is called The Reaper and it\'s a domed type reed ! I have been using it for a year now and used it all September hunting elk and I also used it at The world Elk Calling championships which no I have never won YET !!

Trav, I don\'t see this reed on your site. You mentioned it is a domed type reed, I thought only Rocky and Primo\'s have he patent on them? Correct me if I\'m wrong here but does a reed with a dome act more like a standard double?

Craig

Craig correct is it not on my website yet but I will have this call out very soon !! Yes I had to sign my life away to be able to make a domed reed for all of you !! LOL :dance2: :dance2:

I must have made a deal with the Devil thus The REAPER came to life !!

Stay tuned as all you guys will be the first to know when The Reaper and it\'s little brother ( Narrow Frame ) The Phantom become available.
