Opening day archery elk... 18yds...

I just did some research.
Want to know how many GMUs in Colorado that you can get an archery tag with a minimum of 5 PPs?

According to my digging, One - thats right - 1

GMU 40

And the success rate for archery in that unit is 51%

Do you still want to wait for a bigger bull?

That is a good question Brad.

I guess that if I was going to put in for that unit I would have done some research on the quality of bulls in the unit.

It sounds like with that success rate it is managed for numbers which is no different than a OTC unit just less people hunting it maybe.

Opening day and two weeks to hunt I am still waiting.

how many points to draw 61????

I the case of the last picture I would do just like Bill and set there with a :D on my face and soak it all in to remember somewhere down the road....

Phil, we are hoping 12 will pull a 61 tag this year. My Son & I both drew it in 2014 with 12 & our hunting buddy will have 12 going in to this years draw. Fingers crossed. I\'d pass that one on the first morning out, but I ate tag soup in 2014 . Could have shot numerous bulls like the one above. No regrets.

CAN i add?

for the record i would kill that thing opening morning. done and done.

BUT..i would stay and help the rest of the crew. be camp cook, guide, caller, load hauler, camp organizer..do anything to help the team.

how many here would just take their kill and leave? i had a guy do that to me once.

Not me! Shooting an elk is just part of the fun. Now the pressure is off and I can enjoy being in the mountains and help my partner.

x2! The trip, for me, is what it\'s all about. No way you are going to convince me to head home early!

Am I shooting?

Yes and since I am in CO I know plenty of guys to contact for packing. [emoji3]

In the past, I have had NR \'buddies\' come out and hunt elk with me.
But as soon as they shot their elk, BAM! they were headed back to the midwest to their precious WT world.

Like I said. in the \'past\' and \'had\' are the key words... :)

I\'ve had it happen Cliff
I was not happy!!!!

I go out of my way to cook, clean, and help people!!! I enjoy that a lot.

The only way I would leave early for any hunt would be a family emergency. If I were to tag out I would be excited just to hang out and learn and hopefully somehow be a hand in my buddy tagging an animal. Time on earth is too precious to give up a day in the mountains.

Last year I had to head home early for my grandson. I have shot my elk on opening morning a few times and stayed the whole two weeks in camp and helping the rest of my family get their elk and pack. There are some other guys that camp at the same spot we do that I have become friends with and have helped them pack out their elk and they have helped me pack out mine.

one year, had a buddy opt out to leave early. he got a deer. we gave him absolute hell. then he played us a voicemail of his young daughter crying and missing her dad.

we helped him pack. :)

family first..especially cute crying baby daughters.

Exactly. Family first. We wouldn\'t be where we are and be able to spend so much time outdoors without supportive families.
