Out Of State Hunt

The thought of hunting some totally new area and having an opportunity to shoot a second elk, in the same year, has always interested me. The things that hold me back are the cost, time involved, and ignorance of those other places. I could go scout some otc areas of Idaho or western Montana. I think I would want a rifle hunt for my second opportunity. I believe it is generally uncertainty, and going alone on one of these ventures, that holds me back. Not knowing an area really reduces any hunter\'s likelihood of killing an elk. Rifle hunting for me might lower the odds some more.
What would it take to get you to hunt a totally new area especially an unknown State?

Swede, this is the same for me. I don\'t have the time to go try to learn a new area in a different state. If I did have time, I would rather spend that on learning my current area in Colorado. I could also do a second hunt in Colorado and it would be way less expensive than an out of state tag.

What would it take for me to hunt another state? Probably a situation where someone I know hunted another state, got to know the area, and invited me along. I would have to feel good about my chances at success to drop the extra money on a tag.

just go. you can scout when you get there if you have to. its about the fun of hunting a new area. yes, the cost of a out of state tag is very high. but, put back 15 bucks a week and you will have the tag money. i didnt hunt for years cause of cost of tag, not knowing how, etc. only thing i got out of it was less years to hunt.

I know what I would do if I were you.
Pack the camper up and head out.
Ask the Mrs. If she wants to come along for a camping/hunting trip.

I think if you decided to do it, you will be more excited about it as approaches.

Set your expectations somewhat low, the chance of disappointment is less, and take it for what it\'s worth.

John- Dad and I are considering this for next year aswell. We have enough points now, dad has max and I have 2 behind max, to draw the unit we want in Wyoming. I\'m thinking, if vacation time allows next year, to hunt our area here in Oregon opening weekend then we will head to Wyoming for 14 days for the two middle weeks, not ideal timing but my job won\'t let me take the last week cause classes start again at the college.

I think with your internet buddies you could get some decent Intel for general areas for a rifle hunt. Then follow up with map scouting. I bet you could pull it off.

I do it every year. Wyoming is the place for rifle hunting. Get a cpl Antelope doe tags and a cow Elk tag and go. Elk is generally better late however.

i live in a crappy hunt spot.

hell, next year i plan to hunt DOVE out of state!! all i really have local is some difficult (i.e. challenging) hog hunting. i cant believe a CA public land pig is one of my \"grail\" animals.
