Patience pays off... Son tags out - So does Dad

278 yards would be a long bow shot. I bet you are glad you chose the :mg:

Can\'t wait to hear the story. Was the beets an atractant or did you hunt trails?

As I mentioned, even tho we had success, there were some setbacks that we had to over-come.
Opening day was HOT! 82 degrees. Sunday was 80 degrees. I had never deer hunted in such warm weather. We hunted mornings and evenings, with the evening hunt TERRIBLE with mosquitoes. I had never deer hunted and swatted mosquitoes like that.
The area was new to us. We quickly learned that the deer were living in the standing corn, only to leave to come to water. Between these two factors, we adjusted and learned the deer movement in the new area.
On Sunday, as luck would have it, my rifle slipped from my hand and fell over, landing square on the side of the scope. Knowing the impact it took I knew there was a risk that the scope could be off?
Monday morning we walked in 2 miles to our spot. We had stashed a game cart and tree stands in the area Friday night for future use. Cole and I were ~250yards apart. I heard him shoot and he sent me a text ? ?Buck Down!! And there is another 3x3 standing here!! ? Come and shoot him!?
I got out of my tree stand and quietly made my way over. I saw Cole in his tree. He was watching me, and the buck, the buck was watching me? I was looking for the buck?
The buck suddenly made a few bounds and stopped about 70yds away. I settle the crosshairs and BOOM! And he bounded away?.!! Upon checking for and blood it was apparent that I missed? I yet to have to shoot the 270 to see how far off it is
So, back to business of Cole?s buck. He took a load of gear [and my 270] back to the truck [2 miles away] while I sat in his tree stand. Several deer came by but nothing to shoot. Upon Cole arrival back to get the deer, we quartered it up and went and got my tree stand and then started the 2 mile trek to the truck.

It wasnt long when we noticed that we had a flat tire. Im sure a goathead punctured it. We still had 1.5 miles to go so we just drug that cart with a flat tire? that wasn?t fun.
It took a long time to make that trek, switching side and stopping to rest.
But like I told my son, we were making memories!

Like I mentioned, it takes ~3 Pref Points to draw this tag.
I used 7 Pref Points so I could hunt this unit. Not so much for a trophy, but to hunt with my son

Glad you guys had a great hunt. I can relate to the mosquitoes part, that seems to be the norm for hunting SEMO. You guys are going to have a ton of meat between the elk and WT.

Enjoy those hunts with your son while you can. My son\'s 16 and between school and his job he hasn\'t had a lot of time to hunt this fall. I fear it\'s going to be like that for several years to come.

Very cool, BK! Sometimes the value of the preference points aren\'t in the unit\'s quality or success rate.

I dumped a load of points last year on a low point unit that I wanted to hunt, so that I could start over this year with my oldest son and build points together for a good hunt with him in a few years. In turn, my youngest son should be started in the points game about the time we cash those in, so we\'ll all start over again at that point. The hope is to get a few quality hunts in during their teen years, every 3-4 years, and take advantage of youth tags and other 2nd choice tags when/where we can.

Congrats to Brad and Cole on another great Father,Son hunt. I must say you guys sure don\'t waist anytime putting game on the ground either!! You guys have had one heck of a successful season! Way to go!
