OK..... I have always hunted (10 years) the first week of Elk archery season because of vacation/kids/life and I live in Texas. It is different as the animals are usually in a feeding pattern and aren't real vocal.

This year I can"t go 1st archery, so imma try to get there peak rut. (I can go whenever). Hunting private land outside Ridgeway, Co.

I know rut varies w/ temp, rain, moon ect... BUT, what is the "typical" best rut week? 3rd weekend this year is full moon.

Any input from u guys, especially locals,  is a big plus. Thank you.

The last week is my favorite. We started going the first week and kept pushing it back till now we go last two weeks. Seems like a few days after muzzleloader ends they get fired up. Good luck

Well, full moon is on the 16th, muzzleloaders are 10-18th and the season ends early this year on the 25th. If you only get one week to hunt, I would definitely suggest going the 19-25th.

If I had one week to go I would go the third week in September which is the 11-17 for 2016. This is typically (of course depending on weather, moon, ect.) the peak of the rut where I go and bulls are usually most vocal in this week and the previous week. Also, I am hunting public land on a OTC tag so hunting pressure usually quiets the elk later in the season and they are less willing to talk and come into calls.

Great question as I am for the first time ever hunting elk during archery season in Colorado. I cannot make the opener because I will be on a solo backcountry blacktail hunt in NorCal. Any info on unit 85 in Colorado?

Tough call...I hunted the entire season in Colorado last year.  Everything was quiet the first couple weeks and then they got super vocal at the start of muzzleloader, but then shut down almost completely after a couple days of shots ringing out.  Then it took them until the half way through the final week of archery to get really fired up again.  So if you're looking for vocal elk and only have a week to get it done, then I would either start hunting a few days prior to muzzle loader...or the last week of the season.  Either option should hopefully get you into some bugling bulls.

I'm a muzzleloader hunter, so that's when I hunt. The rut means nothing to me and I don't need to with my hunting method. All I need is no hunters in the area I hunt.

If the rut means nothing to you, then stop screwing it up for the bowhunters and go during rifle season ; )

How do I screw up a hunt for a bow hunter when there's none around where I hunt?

What's the matter. A whole month to hunt is not enough for you to get it done?

Maybe you can get all the bear hunters with rifles kicked out of YOUR season to. They also get the whole month of Sept.

Frankly, i'd like my muzzleloader season free of bow hunters. Most of them have a condescending attitude like you.

To stay on the topic , from experience, from what I have read on numerous articles, and many discussions with hunters in the field, from about the 20th of September on the rut is usually in full force. With the weather, hunting pressure and the moon phase having the most affect on the rut.  I have a good friend in the general area who is a ranch foreman near where you are hunting (Ridgeway) and he confirms this time period.
