How so? Maybe I just need to understand what you mean by baiting.

For one thing, baiting is illegal in CO. Calling is not (Unless you use something electronic to call an elk).

Maybe my old brain isn\'t as sharp as it used to be. Computers do that that

Get noisy while calling. Break logs, stomp, and make elk sounds. Elk expect to hear elk sounds and I try to imitate them as best I can.
Bringing them to you with calling is just a small step away from baiting. Hunting is so much more than tricking them into thinking you\'re not what you are.

 Still Hunter you crack me up.. I think this would be a great debate and would enjoy the challenge that you would present. I know I would not change your mind nor would you change mine, but it would still be a great discussion and insight into others thought process. You used the analogy of calling to baiting or tricking them \"Still\" trying to figure that one out. Can you give a more detailed comparison or insight to why you believe this. Let the debate begin tactfully and from a factual point of view without emotion or verbal degrading. I know we can do this and I know you have a lot I can learn from you as well.

Boy I like this forum!

Heretic! Crucify him! (My Easter contribution to the web site).

Ok, so I don\'t think Stillhunter comes off as \"my way or the highway\" ... and it\'s true that calling is a form of \"trickery\" or at least a misrepresentation of the facts. It\'s a bit of a stretch to see it akin to baiting elk, which is also trickery, but it is a \"misdirection\", for sure.

Some of the greatest football plays are \"trick-plays\" ... the flea-flicker, for example. Stillhunter prefers good ol\' hard-nosed football, and I like that, being of the Tom Osborne era in Nebraska. But even old Tom had the \"fumblerooski\"! That\'s what made his \"tricks\" so deadly ... no one expected them because he wasn\'t over-using them.

Personally, I envy someone who can stillhunt those creatures with a stick, a ball, or a bullet. And fundamentals ... that\'s where seasons are made.

Me? I\'m just trying to play a game without getting an \"offsides\" call against me.

I went, and re-read all my posts. Nowhere did I say...you should all do it like this. I\'m very careful to not say that, but for some odd reason guys on forums take it that way. I\'m just trying to show there\'s more than one way to hunt. Just because I only do it that way, doesn\'t mean i\'m telling you to do only my way. Very seldom do I read about a hunter going in after the elk. It\'s always bringing the elk to the hunter.

Which btw is the only similarity of baiting to calling. You\'re bringing the elk to you through artificial means. If the bait wasn\'t there for the animals, or if you didn\'t call. The animals wouldn\'t be coming to you.

My dad was a still hunter, and that\'s what he taught me. I was a good student, and paid attention, but like anybody I questioned if it was the best way to hunt. So, I tried every method there was except calling. I\'ve already told you why. After trying all methods I decided my dad was right, and his way was the most rewarding. Not the best way. Not the easiest, but the most rewarding. For me to be rewarding it has to be a challenge. I know everybody doesn\'t feel that way, and all they want is a kill. That\'s ok for them. I just like to point out my way for those who might have some interest in it. I\'m not trying to shove it down anybodies throat. Although some take it that way. Not sure why, and I probably never will. I\'m not sure how to say something other than the way I say it.

Maybe I should put a smiley after every sentence. I always figured hunters were guys who weren\'t sensitive. We shouldn\'t have to tip toe around worried about offending someone.

Bullnuts...Pretty disappointed dude. Even after I offered to help you.

I use an old sidelock muzzleloader, real black powder, round ball, and iron sights for all seasons.

I grew up using a Winchester 94 in 30-30 my dad got me for Christmas in 1952 when I was 10 years old. I used that gun for most of my life for mulies and elk with iron sights until getting into muzzleloaders.

I do like the simple old way. My biggest problem is being born when I was instead of 1830. For sure I would have been a mountain man/trapper.

Pretty disappointed after you offered to help me? Wow, I must have missed that, and I don\'t remember asking for your help in the first place. I\'ve been VERY successful using my own methods of calling, running and gunning, stalking, and everything else I do. It was you, I believe, who stepped on my post about making elk sounds while I bait, I mean, err, call in the elk so I can simply kill something, anything. You make it sound like anyone with a bugle in their pocket is guaranteed an elk every year, and that, my friend, is about the furthest you can get from the truth. You know, Still Hunter, again it\'s not what you say but how you say it. I guess some people have filters and others don\'t. You obviously don\'t. I\'m not the post police but I think that a lot of your posts are geared toward baiting others into an argument - it\'s how you roll. So while you post abrasive comments about a technique that you\'ve never used and try to group all callers into some sort of lesser hunter category than yours, I\'ll be over here ignoring you. :silent: :silent: :silent: :silent:

A \"patch-and-ball\" man, eh?

I\'ve shot my share of those at whitetails. Fun, to be sure. And your two listed weapons -- sidelock, and an open-sighted .30-.30 -- match your style well.

I still have a half-finished project in .54 in the safe ... and a couple in-lines and a couple other side-locks. Cannon hunting, we called it. I haven\'t shot one in years, though. I thought about taking one for pronghorn this year, for a challenge, if my arrows don\'t work.

As for being abrasive, I think it comes standard with the black powder, doesn\'t it? Perhaps an avatar of an old trapper would help.

Sorry, if I mixed you up with someone else who was coming to hunt my unit. I thought it was bullnuts from another forum.

As for ignoring me? That\'s fine if you\'re that sensitive. I prefer to face problems, but that\'s me. I march to a different tune than you.

Somehow I knew you\'d have a muzzleloader. Finish her up, and go blow some smoke.
