Pronghorn Scouting

Just got back from scouting pronghorn ...

Forgot my camera, so no photos ... but the short story is that the rain this year has been great ... lots of grass, and the bucks are carrying more mass this year than normal. I was lucky enough to look over a dozen or so spots before settling on one that has two small water holes separated by a small spot of land ... so I should be able to cover both ponds.

I\'m just hoping to get a doe before elk season. Hopefully, it\'ll calm my nerves for when that bull walks by and parks himself broadside at 20 yards while he turns his head away from me!

As I left my blind, I came across a genuine B&C buck ... one of the two largest bucks I think I\'ve ever seen, and his horns sort of sweep forward, over his nose a bit.

Also, I saw what can only be described as a non-typical doe. Doe antelope often have little 1\" or 2\" horns ... this one had horns that were at least 4\" if not 6\" and they swept forward horizontally, not vertically. My stand isn\'t near to where I saw her, but you never know.

You\'re just a scouting fool this weekend!
I think good things are gonna happen in WY this year. ;)

Sounds like some great stuff John. Here in NM we are experiencing the same thing because of all the rain. I have been scouting them for the past two months (I am hunting the unit where I live)

How many inches make it a B & C?

I think P & Y is 74-75 inches. I found a monster a few days ago, but I have no clue how to judge how they would score. I just know that he was BIG!!!

I vote we drop some monsters this year :upthumb:

John, I have to say that your weekend is making me a little jealous. Outside of having to watch over Brad I guess... Sounds like you two had a great trip and then you get to spend Monday scouting Antelope? That\'s one heck of a successful weekend if you ask me!

Good luck John! I\'m heading out this weekend.

Scott, since you can\'t hunt with me again this year, I got a Montana Decoy to help me :)

Rudy

Thanks, all, and good luck to those hunting pronghorns.

Rudy, I know you\'re going to do it spot-and-stalk ... I want to try that, too. I made a \"hat\" that looks like a pronghorn head, at the advice of Jacquomo ... and found some \"broken\" country to try it. Not sure how it\'ll work in the early season, though.

I killed several nice bucks and a decent young bull in my dreams last night ... let\'s hope it works out that way.

You guys are so lucky to have all of those critters to hunt! I\'m so jealous. If I ever pull this elk thing off I want to tackle mule deer, antelope and if I should win the lottery or something I really want a big bull moose. Of all those critters I really just want to hear a bull bugle though, it\'s been a goal of mine for a long time. Enjoy your fall. :upthumb:

Dan, minimum P&Y is 67 according to their website. B&C is 80-82.

Here\'s a link to how to measure them. Was hard to tell by your picture but I was guessing 14-15\" mains, maybe longer - he was big.

Thank you Russ!
I will start throwing some random number into that equation so I can figure out a good minimum for horn length. I have some bruziers around here and if I play my cards right, maybe I can pull a P & Y
