Shoot?

I\'m already trying to figure out where my wife will let me put him on the wall. Arrows on its way. :upthumb:

x2! Arrow or bullet is on it\'s way.

Either the new ol\' T/C muzzleloader or the new ol\' Tikka 270 would send one down range without hesitation... :mg: :mg:

He looks alert. I would prefer him to look away and relax a little but at 23 yards he\'s in trouble!

x2! The second that head goes down or looks the other way... thwack!

He\'s alert because I just stopped him with a maaaaaahhhhhh. ;) arrows on it\'s way.

I don\'t have much experience with mature whitetail bucks but from what I do have if he is alert to or because of you, the next move you\'re going to see is his white behind in full retreat... ;) ;)

Just came across this and brought a question to mind. That looks like a relatively young deer..skinny neck, not much of a sway back, and not a very well developed brisket. He still looks like more legs than torso...I would guess a 2.5 to 3.5 year old. Based on that, I would let that deer walk. But, that is coming from a midwesterner. I was wondering if western whitetail exhibit the same characteristics as they age? Also, I imagine that the population of whitetails is smaller, and therefore one cannot be as selective? Just wondering

The number of whitetails is definitely smaller, but the bigger issue is how they are hunted here in the west, which is mainly on public land. If you see a \"big enough\" buck, which by definition is different for everyone, but if it\'s a shooter for you, you better plan on shooting because if you don\'t, someone else will. There is no managing public land for big bucks or bulls out west outside of point restrictions put in place by the wildlife officials.

Most exhibit the same characterists as you mentioned.

The only ones that will fool you are Texas deer, Oklahoma, and some of new mexicos whitetail.
I shot a 5.5-6.5 year old deer a few years ago, but in any other state he would have looked like a 4 year old deer....minus his rack size.

I agree he\'s a young deer but a dead deer because of where I hunt... I hunt leased land and ALL the folks on our lease would shoot him plus our neighbor a few hundred yards across the creek from where I would see him would shoot his baby brother or sister or mother, you get the picture... Plus he would be, rack size, the largest whitetail I ever killed... :D :D

I would shoot but I am aiming at his heart. He will duck where I live being that alert. If that was a doe she probably hits the ground before your arrow gets there....
