Shooting Distance

I practice to 60 but limit my shots to 40. I would do a follow up shot out to 60. I like the thread the needle shots like mentioned above. If you have only one shot opportunity and the animal is leaving. To thread the needle with the vitals in the needle hole is great. If you make the shot you got your animal if you miss you didn\'t wound it. You only hit the tree.

I have a little problem with this. What if your arrow skims a tree, and diverts it to a non vital hit?

As always. I feel a shot shouldn\'t be taken unless you\'re 100% positive you can make it.

That is true Pete. Usually the shots I am refering to the animal is right behind the two trees. The arrow would not deflect much. If the needle was halfway things could change a lot. I don\'t like them shots. The arch of the arrow could cause an arrow to hit limbs. I shot at a 165\" whitetail once that looked like a clear shot. My arrow arched on its way then hit a twig half way and arched up again clean over his back. I never noticed the twig. I am glad I missed clean. It is a hard thing to remember at the moment but if you have your 30yd pin on an animal and your 10 and 20 pins have sticks in the way at those distances even though your 30 is clear. You are going to hit the stick.

I don\'t try any shot unless I am sure.

Not being a bow hunter i\'m not sure how arrows ricochet. It was just a thought that popped in my head. I\'m always taking shots in heavy cover, and I need to be careful I don\'t miss seeing a twig sticking out. As my vision has gotten worse over the years I find myself looking for wider and wider openings..

Vision gotten worse... :lolno: I went to renew my drivers licsence and couldn\'t read the top line. They wanted me to read line 5. I am waiting for my new first pair of glasses to arrive so I can retake the test. It is part of getting older I guess. The good part is I might be able to see them darn twigs now. I always think positive. :upthumb:

Pretty much like everyone else practice to 60 yards but have never killed an elk over 45 yards. I like hunting the pole thickets and in most cases 45 yards is tops.
