What is a good way to simulate shooting an elk to test for bullet expansion. I do have some hair on elk hide but what do I wrap it around to simulate bone and organs? Never have done testing like this what is the best procedure for collecting the bullet after?

Do you know any farmers or ranchers?

Ask them if they have a "dump" location for cows that die prior to usage.
You could find some great bones there that could be used to simulate this.

The best I have ever heard for testing expansion, assuming you don't have access or the money to spend on the actual gel stuff used by manufacturers, is wet newspaper. Basically you just squeeze as much newspaper as you can into a large box or two or three and then soak the newspaper before shooting. The other option I've heard of is filling a bunch of milk jugs with water and putting them in a line. The only problem with that method is you get one shot and then the gallons explode. Assuming you need at least 3-5 gallons per shot, you could need a lot of gallons of water.

Out of curiosity, what bullets are you looking to try and out of what rifle?

ballistic gel i suppose.
but i wouldnt.  just google that bullet.  hunters are the biggest group of yammerer..i bet there is a 9-page descussion about every bullet out there.  with pics.
